The Review Daemon: Tribe X

Posted by / in Reviews / 2 comments

Today I’m reviewing Tribe X, an urban fantasy webtoon available to read on the Spottoon comic reading platform.  Tribe X is written by Jae Kwon Hyun and Yoon Sun Park, illustrated by Ki Woo Hong and translated by Sumi and Riley Jung.  I’m not sure if my critique and review will get translated by someone back into Korean, so my focus in this review will actually be less on critical advice for them as much as my thoughts on the comic for potential readers.

Why I Read: Impulse

Posted by / in Reviews / 2 comments

Today I’m going to review a Korean webtoon I read on the Spottoon platform, Impulse, written and drawn by Minyong Chung (also spelled Min-Yong Jung on the site?) and translated into English by Kyunghwa Lee.  It’s a bit of a dystopian Earth sci-fi, which you all know I’m always a fan of, so sit back and let me tell you about it :D

Spottoon: A new webtoon reading platform

Posted by / in Blog / 16 comments

So I’ve been hearing a lot about “webtoons” lately. For those of you who weren’t aware, webtoons are basically just the name Koreans give to webcomics. But since South Korea has such a large webtoon market, the name has really stuck. It’s even entering into more general usage here in the US as several South Korean webtoon companies are expanding into English-speaking markets. One of my friends even took second place in a science fiction webtoon contest on one of their sites.

Today, I get to tell you about a new webtoon reading platform, Spottoon, being produced by the South Korean company RollingStory.  Today’s their Grand Opening, and  I got the full scoop from the company and even a backstage pass to take a look at some of their comics (which I’ll post reviews for soon).

Comic Spotlight: Center Lane

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

Thanks to Chris Galbreath for this trailer image of Center Lane, a slice-of-life drama about an emancipated teen dealing with trying to balance high school and adult life.

I even wrote up a critical review of it recently, because Chris asked for feedback.  It’s kind of technical though, since it’s for him, not for you ;)  You can decide if you like just by reading it :D

The Review Daemon: Reckstar

Posted by / in Reviews / 8 comments

Today I’m reviewing Reckstar, a humorous sci-fi space opera, with story by Joey Cruz and art by Michelle Nguyen.  I enjoyed the new format and focus I started last time, so I’m going to be writing this again as mostly a critical review for the creators, to hopefully help them improve their comic.  So while I’ll try, I’m not going to avoid what could be termed spoilers, in order to give them the best feedback I can.

Comic Spotlight: Blitz Phoenix

Posted by / in Blog / 10 comments

As part of my hiatus I wanted to spotlight some cool comics I either enjoy reading or that are made by people I think are swell.  Today’s first one is both :D

Blitz Phoenix, by Emily Brackhan, is a fun, beautifully colored superteen comic with a great story and entertaining characters and dialogue.  You should definitely check it out :D
