Chapter 5: Page 16 – Filter Daemons

Posted by / in Comic / 69 comments

Just thought I’d let you all know that Seba is going full steam on Chapter 6.  Those pages are looking really cool :D

Don’t forget to vote and etc!  Patrons will get more sneak peeks.  I’m considering upping the sneak peek to 2 weeks ahead (or more) instead of just 1 week ;)

Also, check out the new Critical Reception page to see some recent reviews and interviews we did :)  As well as 2 new Creator Spotlights, one by a guest interviewer :)

  • Adriano

In the last panel Jane looks like she had a wild night… Just sharin’ my thoughts ahah xD

Oh, and why does she look so human/realistic ? It’s because she shares Tenzin body ? Or is there another reason ?

And to answer to Jane, we humans deal with so many inputs because they’re with us since we’re born :D

    • Jane looks the way she does in large part because she has spent years crafting her visual avatar. Tenzin didn’t like talking to a disembodied voice, which started the process. But then Jane continued it because she has begun seeing herself as a person, not as a program. And all the other people she knows have realistic human bodies :)

Jane being in Tenzin’s brain will most certainly have repercussions on this as well.

      • Adriano

Okay, thank you for the answer :D

        • NickDA

Also, how would we show that a computer program (AI) is getting overloaded… if this was a gag a day comic we could use like the “blue screen of death”, but here we’ve been presenting her as a person. So, much like we would show someones thoughts, this gives you the best way of relating to what she was “feeling”

          • theRoUS

A great big green vector-character 601 overlay. 100 Internet points to the first person who gets that. :-)

          • theRoUS

@DaemonDan:disqus I see you upvoted this.. but did you get it? Mwahaha.

          • Absolutely…not. :D

      • theRoUS

“Jane being in Tenzin’s brain”: Immediately made me think of the Antiloop track (and video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bpjQ_FlsDA — be sure to watch the whole thing, as the images are peculiarly appropriate to Jane’s experience, particularly around the 2:07 mark.

    • theRoUS

Wild night? Well, she has awakened in a strange place, and apparently minus her clothing. :-)

      • Adriano

Ahah omg well you’re damn right !

  • Matt [in Middletown]

Number four, find restroom and a bath, scratch nose because there’s this annoying tickle, discover cheezburgers.

    • Adriano

Number five, go for social interactions in a bar with Tenzin’s surviving friends like Randy and Angeline, get drunk (for easiest social integration), eat a kebab or two, get drunk again, vomit everything, go better, then get drunk again, forget everything that follows after and wake up with a bad hangover at Angeline’s apartments.

Oh, and don’t do this, kids !

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Wake up wearing something backwards, a lampshade, and holding a stuffed bunny for reasons unknown.

      • Hornet

Having intimate relations, with an AI of the opposite gender in your head, would probably NOT end well.

        • Adriano

Oh my, this will HURT a lot.

    • theRoUS

Start watching cat videos. Whoops, end of productive activity.

Maybe I’ll coin that: “Lemur’s Law: Productivity is inversely and asymptotically proportional to time spent watching cat videos.”

      • Matt [in Middletown]

        Error CAT in module productivity,
        Beginning stack dump.

        • theRoUS

Beginning stack dump… aww, lookit the kittens!
          — stack dump aborted!

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            Stack exploded from cuteness.

          • NickDA

Code jokes are the best of jokes… coding up a new API right now… tempted to make the error codes funny… “fatal exception: because cats”

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Saw a custom one while in uniform, it said “because I said so.”

          • theRoUS

One of the best I recall was from an IBM/Digital adapter: “Fatal GAAS”

  • theRoUS

My guess: data volume is up (10²), data source count is up (10³), mean transmission speed is ‘way down and (currently) nondeterministic within her experience.

By the way: flag and lock hypothalamic data flow controls. Messing about with those is not beginner’s meat. :-)

    • Oh yeah, Jane isn’t going to play with anything like that :) First things first, just figure out what all this new noise means :)

      • theRoUS

Wel, provided she can identify them as such. I wouldn’t be surprised by a little switched-on-the-wipers-looking-for-the-turn-signal fumbling at first.

        • Well, she does have access to medical databases, and is programmed with a thorough understanding of which brain regions do what and etc :) She at least knows to leave certain regions alone, and where to focus.

          • theRoUS

Heh. I know a good bit about the mechanics of flight, but I’d be a flippin’ menace on an airliner flight deck with all the widgets to twiddle.

          • Well Jane better be on her best behavior, and resist the urge to twiddle :P

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            “Adrenal glands? Whadda these do?”
            *click*
            *NoS Boosted Tenzin!*

        • NickDA

Also, the nueral net is segmented because it used to be piping into a dumber non-AI analysis program that the Doc was using.

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            Ah, BrainFragger.
Will we ever “meet” this skull whomping mallet program?

      • Adriano

And then we see Jane going to Google typing “strange noise in my new meat body need help”

      • sebasp

You know, you kinda played with that…

  • I don’t know why, but Jane saying “yowza” is oddly amusing to me.

    • Hehe, yeah, my wife mocked me gently for that this morning too ;) Jane has a flair for the dramatic, though, so I stand by it ;)

      • theRoUS

“Well, Jane, now you know: meat lives in a firehose.”

        • I’m guessing a quote from something? Maybe the band Firehose, “Under the Influence of the Meat Puppets.” ?

          • theRoUS

Just a quote from me. As in ‘drinking from a firehose.’

10 years ago I saw a bumper sticker: “The experiment has begun. A million monkeys on a million keyboards: USENET.”

          • Dusty Coyote

Pretty sure Reddit works for that experiment too.

    • sebasp

Well, thats just how Jane talks and the way she is. I actually like her more because of those small things she does

      • Adriano

You don’t need much to get satisfaction ahah ^^

And what you’re saying is commonly what we find attractive in people : the little thing they do that makes them human and cute/sympathetic

  • theRoUS

So.. Who’s going to be experiencing Alien Hand (body) Syndrome? Tenzin (when he wakes up)? Or Jane (and I mean Right Now)?

    • Maybe both ;)

      • Matt [in Middletown]

“Who’s scratching my nose, me or you?”

        • Adriano

“Or maybe someone else…” says another unknown voice

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Great, just had a mental image of Deathbot wearing a waiters suit.
            That would be….hilarious.

          • Adriano

Deathbot as Alfred Pennyworth in the new Batman : Minerva City, coming soon (in 2100) in your theaters !

          • Matt [in Middletown]

“Will you be taking the MinervaMobile sir and ma’am?”
“No Deathbot, we’ll be taking the battlecycle today.”
            “Very good choice.”
*deathbot has that “uptight butler” voice going.*

          • There you go making more great “Deathbot and Friends” strip ideas :D

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            LOL, yes.
The Demon Archives Does The Comics, a small one off that tosses TDA characters into the worlds of other comics as the characters, but with a DA twist.
BaTenzin would still have Jane in his head, but I’m still wondering who we could throw into the guise of the Joker.
            Rick, Randy 2.0.
Yeahh…..*bad idea detected, flee for your lives!*

          • Adriano

Ahah yeah, we’re great at making those funny crossovers xD

I’m really glad Matt’s there to help me :’D

          • Delta-v

Yeah, as long as you two behave yourselves, we just let you go on. It’s usually pretty entertaining, and you have come up with some…..interesting….. ideas. :)

          • Adriano

            Thank you very much o/
Just tell me if I cross the line ^^ Sometimes it’s hard to see it x)

          • Adriano

            Batman : Minerva City
            Featuring :
            Tenzin as Batman
Jane as Batman’s little voice in the head
            Angeline as Batgirl
            Randy as Robin
            Deathbot as Alfred
and Dr Kavi as the Joker (or maybe the Penguin ?) ;)

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            Doc Kavi as Joker.
Only he does it in a dry almost humorless fashion and is actually quite serious about it when he asks “Why so serious?”

          • Adriano

This would suit him so much : a non-smiling Joker saying “Wanna know how I got those glasses ?”

          • Matt [in Middletown]

He pulls off his sunglasses to reveal a second set of glasses.

          • Adriano

I totally see him doing so xD

Or he could say that :
“I’m gonna put glasses on you !
*serious look* … Because your view is bad…”

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Rick (Randy 2.0) standing there scratching Tenzin’s nose.
“Randy *snicker* stop trolling the Captain!”

  • Oz

Just read the archive. The story and art are great. How often does the comic update? Thanks!

    • Every Monday and Thursday, with bonus content (blogs, interviews, reviews, lore articles, short stories, etc) on other days :)

Welcome and glad you enjoyed it :D Did one of my ads I placed today maybe bring you in?

  • Neil Kapit

Sensations strong enough to frazzle her virtual hair! She’s human enough to have virtual hair that can be frazzled, so she’ll do fine…

    • sebasp

She lost control of it. Also, the input from Tenzin’s body is messing with her ( he’s naked and bald). We talked a lot about these pages and the next ones w Dan and Nick.

Jane’s simulation isnt just a simple poligons with a texture, her hair would have a phisics motor and so her body, but she controls all of that. The overload messed her capacity to control the simulation of her body and the parameters just went wrong.

Anyone who worked with 3d models will understanf. Put an extra cero on Poser and the arm will spin 5 times and twist the joint., We didnt mean to show her in pain ( or bald :P ) but yes out of control

      • theRoUS

Ha! Image in head from Shrek bonus material: When Lord Farquar’s hair wouldn’t behave. I almost passed out because I was laughing so hard.

      • theRoUS

“Also, the input from Tenzin’s body is messing with her ( he’s naked and bald).”

Wow, she’s mapped her avatar to his meat so fast? Wicked!

        • theRoUS

Wait, that last ¶ wasn’t supposed to come out sounding like that. No offence intended, Jane!

  • Dusty Coyote

In a startling recursive plot twist, jane uses tenzin to google web comics about jane using tenzin to google webcomics about….

  • Citrus Reaper

    I love the crazy hair.
