Chapter 6: Page 20 – Frustration

Posted by / in Comic / 65 comments

I am disappointed that none of you made a ‘glowing blue eyes/entering the avatar state’ joke on Monday’s page.  For shame :P

Again, after the last page of this chapter, we’ll be doing a 1.5 week break while we run a scavenger hunt/sweepstakes.  BUT, I need to know what you want as sweepstakes rewards.  A cover page poster? A ebook digital download?

Let me know in the comments below, as well as thoughts on this page, and how they’re going to rouse Tenzin :)

  • Amberlight

    Some people totally called it.
    Angry Tenzin is adorable.

    • Hehe yeah, but at least no “Milamception” :D

      • Adriano

        I’m disappointed, ahah

    • Yujo Hi-Jump Coyote

Fortunately, I was one of those people :D. I was rather shocked since it was a joke, but still :P.

  • Ydo Ucare

“We’re going to try a radical new approach. We’re going to bring in a small child. They’re so good at waking people that you won’t sleep for the next 18 years!”

Oh, me? I’m totally not bitter about waking up extra early this morning. Nope.

    • Dusty Coyote

      Found the parent.

      • Adriano

“Find the parents” : That’s a new game for TDA comments section !

        • Chris

          Sleep is for children.

Coffee is for the rest of us.

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

I read somewhere once that a yawn is a silent scream for caffeine

          • NickDA

Gonna tell my wife that whenever she elbows me for yawning and not covering my mouth.

          • Adriano

Coffee is not needed by the strongest. The strongest fight sleep with their bare hands

          • Matt [in Middletown]

“I once fought sleep with nothing but an entrenching tool and a length of paracord!” -overly aggressive artilleryman digging holes in fields like all evil rabbits should.

    • NickDA

Sleep… what is this “sleep” thing you speak of… surely you mean dozing light “naps” in which you never really get that rested feeling.

  • Ydo Ucare

Also, we all know Tenzin can’t enter the avatar state like that! His chakras are a total mess. More flying sky bison would probably help him with that, you know. *hint hint*

    • I knew I could count on you :)

      • Dusty Coyote

You can count on me too.

        No Tenzin, THIS is lotus.

        • Pemigewasset ex pat

This is you ain’t in your 40s with a lifetime of skiing, firefighting, medicing & jumping out of helicopters with Marines behind you.
          ow!

        • Look ma, no combat boots!

  • Matt [in Middletown]

    I know, HulkZin Smash!
    Smash yourself awake!

  • Lily reveals she is actually a consenting adult and kisses Tenzin awake, subverting the “Sleeping Beauty” paradigm and allowing romance to bloom.

    • Ewwww.

      • Note how I said she’s a consenting adult! So it’s only kind of weird instead of super weird!

        • Delta-v

She wouldn’t have to be an adult to kiss him on the cheek. If you’ve ever been awakened by a wet, sticky kiss on the cheek, you’ll know what I mean. :)

          • That would work.

          • Someone find a dog, the amount of slobber alone would wake him up. The dog-breath would be a bonus.

    • Matt [in Middletown]

No, she’s actually secretly a mad scientist and she hooks Tenzin up to wall current!
She works tirelessly through the night and he eventually wakes up as a hideous cyborg Tenzin 2.0!
/ said in Sarge voice from Red vs Blue.

  • Delta-v

Perhaps I’m just tired, but I’m finding the comic as well as the comments hilarious. The first two panels make me laugh every time I look at them. Bravo, Seba, bravo!

  • Honza Prchal

Tickle his toes, mate! He’s still got 5 of ’em.

  • Dusty Coyote

I usually just take my right arm and slap myself across the face but…. why are you looking at me like that?

Try tickling both of my feet?

  • Now that’s a delightfully funny needle-scratcher after yesterday’s dramatic buildup. Nice to know this comic hasn’t forgotten its (incredibly dark) sense of humor.
Tenzin’s pose is hilarious in the thumbnail. It looks like he’s stretching after having just woke up from a nap.

  • Adriano

“I wonder if I could use that little girl’s brain to make Tenzin awake”

    • Adriano

Now I wonder in what way she could use it…

    • I like how you all perceive Jane just a step away of being a maniac AI

      • Adriano

All AIs are mad, it is known ! xD

        • NickDA

          It is known Khaleesi

          • Adriano

Glad you know my reference ahah

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Well, depends on whether or not an AI sees everything and everyone as variables to be used and implemented to create an outcome.

  • With the big disconnect between perceived body and actual body–maybe subconsciously (sub-subconsciously?) noticed for the first time since turning away from hiding, I’m not surprised it’s hard to map back into reality. The handshake isn’t adding up.

    • Chris

Not really, depending on what theory you subscribe to. The subconscious was just a Freud concept but that is all it is. The Subconscious doesn’t actually exist outside of Theory, and so Tenzin can’t wake up because his body is still in a severe state of shock, is not whole, while his mind remains as whole body and Sane from his inward perspective. There is a large physical barrier preventing him from waking up.

      • Are we actually somewhat in agreement here?

Denial exists independent of psychological theory; it is part of a convenient vocabulary, much as is military doctrine.

Tenzin’s illustrated self concept is whole; if his brain has processed the lost limbs at all, (I think it must have) that is the disconnect. He just promised to fight for Minerva and Lilly; his personal definition of fight is still “kill people, break things,” using a fit, whole body augmented by Minerva tech. I believe he is avoiding confronting the first (disability) protection fail of continued existence.

If you mean medical shock, surely that has been stabilized at this point?

        • NickDA

He has been out for quite some time (have to ask Dan the actual full timeline) so he is medically stable and has been for some time… with the exception of the coma. But I am overall just glad that we have some readers interested in the psychological aspects of the comic… its not just a action flick… :D

          • “Not just an action flick” is definitely part of the appeal. :)

          • I have avoided a super specific time frame just to not back myself into a corner, but according to Angeline a chapter or so back it’s been about a month ;)

        • Chris

A little late :) But i suppose we are in agreement. I was arguing that the conscious as seen internally is the same externally, so because of the severe physical trauma (while medically stable) is extensive his body might not want to wake up. He will still have pain and shock to handle when he does wake up despite physically being medically stable. It has to do with our sense of wholeness.

          • Waking up is definitely not going to be THAT happy an experience for him, that’s for sure ;)

  • Neil Kapit

Avatarverse Tenzin was piss-poor at entering the spirit world by himself, so it only makes sense that his Demon Archives namealike would have the same struggles getting out of the “spirit world”, right?

  • Pemigewasset ex pat

gonna be so cool if what I think is going to happen, happens. Totally shiny!

    • Oh? And what do you think is going to happen? :D

      • Pemigewasset ex pat

I think Jane is going to take Tenzin walkabout in the digital world, maybe even operate some mechs or armor, do a little recon, gather a little intel as bits and bytes.

        • Matt [in Middletown]

Tenzimon, virtual monster..Tenzimon is the champion..
          / end lame Digimon reference.

          • NickDA

Show had so much promise… such a let down.

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            Yup.
They could have done quite a bit with the premise.
But, they went “Final Fantasy” path with it.

Edit: side thought… What would an evolved Tenzimon look like, and what would his stats be?

  • James Hunter

Jane is going to use what “Lily” sees to help Tenzin wake. Even though it would probably give him a shock.

    • Matt [in Middletown]

“Lily, can you tickle his foot for a second?”
      Wait..foot? Don’t I have feet?
      “Uh, yeah, about that.. Tenzin..”

      • James Hunter

Yeah something like that but more that Tenzin sees from Lily’s point of view at himself

        • Matt [in Middletown]

“We’re headin’ to tha scrapheap boyo! But before they recycle us for parts, let’s make them pay for our missing ones!” – said in coach voice from the first Rocky movie.
“Wait..missing parts?! And what’s with that voice?!”
“I’m just feeling froggy.”-Jane continues with grizzled voice.

  • Professor Fate

After experiencing a massive trauma, Tenzin’s body is in the process of repairing itself and doesn’t need any interference. I’m guessin’ he’s in a brain-induced coma while things are under construction. I’m not sure the sub-conscious can detect things like that.

  • We at The Demon Archives are deeply compromised with keeping the comic grounded with real life science. Here is a view of what’s happening on this page, without the fancy renders of Tenzin and herself that Jane developed as interfase:

    • Delta-v

      I think I see a typo….

      • Hehe, in the image itself, or in what Seba wrote? Because I think he just grabbed a random brain scan about how prayer affects the brain ;)

        • Delta-v

The scan, of course………Uh, you can read it, right? :)

    • Matt [in Middletown]

“Player one start! Player one immobilized!”
      “Player two in spectate mode!”
*I know it says ‘prayer’, but I couldn’t resist.*

    • Matt [in Middletown]

Sidenote: Is Tenzin aware that he is floating above the virtual floor?
If not, Jane should SO tell him just to watch him drop.

    • Matt [in Middletown]

Panel one: “Jane, you are reeeally close, that’s creepin me out.”
