Chapter 6: Page 22 – Rise and Shine

Posted by / in Comic / 137 comments

Oh hey, good job, some of you guessed different parts of this correctly ;)  Hopefully it’s fairly obvious now, and even more so come Monday.

A couple of other reminders:

  1. I posted a robot fanart and another custom musical theme we commissioned, “Machine Dreams.”
  2. It’s my birthday this week!  So, you should like, give me something?  I dunno, maybe a nice comment, or a social share, or a fanart/fanfic or something ;)
  3. Next week, when this chapter ends, I’m going to be running a week long scavenger hunt/sweepstakes, hiding clues/answers all around our websites and social medias and whatnot.  For every clue you find you’ll get an entry into the prize raffle drawing.  I’ll probably give away some posters and ebooks, but I’d love to hear some other prize suggestions :)
  • James Hunter

Yay Tenzin is up. Now he looks at himself and he gets the shock of his life. Also he looks heaps different without hair.

    • Most of that will grow back at least ;)

      • Matt [in Middletown]

“I think I’ll grow ‘evil Spock’ style facial hair.”

        • Pemigewasset ex pat

Let’s face it, knight rider did it best!

          • Matt [in Middletown]

And even the vehicle had an evil twin too!
            Kitt vs Karr

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

I had smooth forgotten about that. I was focused on Goliath. +1!

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Lol, yeah. It was a throwaway storyline too.

      • DrCrazy102

What about that bit in the back? What with the “scales” (?) for the neural network seeming to replace normal skin

        • The scales are more of a stabilizer to the port than anything else. Easily removed by the doctors.

          • DrCrazy102

Ahhh, thought they were implanted. Good to know he want have a premature bald spot

  • Ydo Ucare

No offense to Tenzin, but I think he might be way scarier than the surgical tools (and I’m still not sure why on earth the doc had those out anyway).

    • Amberlight

To pole another hole in Tenzin’s head I think. He did mention “another entry point”.
Although I’d imagine that you’d need more than a scalpel to make one in the scull. Then again some holes may have been pre-drilled for installing the neural net and now just covered by the skin.

    • NickDA

What surgical tools… I see no surgical tools… Jane had some nice renders there (panel one right hand side)…

      • Maarten Spreij

ooooowwwhhh you cheating bastards! :-p poor Tenzin..
I really dig the green-for-virtual though, I have to remember to look for that more..

        • NickDA

Hehehe… I wonder whether Doc even said anything in the prior page… in “meat-space”… he looks like he’s just checking out his tablet… totally confused and like “wtf mate?” in this page :D

        • And Jane’s eyes! Jane eyes in green is like the sound of a hard drive working hard.

          • Dusty Coyote

The glint was hard to catch. I still applaud it. Gotta be looking for it.

      • Amberlight

        Sneaky brain-manipulating Jane.

        • Delta-v

Like I said before, she fights dirty. :)

Bless her little, um, CPU. ^^

      • Dusty Coyote

        Jane photoshops real life.

        • She prefers the term “augmented reality” :P

          • DeNitro

If I woke up with Jane prodding around my brain, I’d need plenty of distilled liquids to re-augment my reality ; -p

          • Matt [in Middletown]

She’d have the nanobots counteract your attempts to liquefy your reality.
And she’d have something hysterical to say about it too in all likelihood.

          • DeNitro

I wonder what would a Type A macho male enjoy more, Having a his female AI scolding him for drinking, or the ability to truly drink everyone in the bar into a coma and laugh about it. :-)

          • Matt [in Middletown]

I wonder if he could use that as a method of getting information?
            Hmm.

        • DrCrazy102

Because jane is the Demon Archive’s Chuck Norris. Don’t you remember when jane shot down the death-bot for tenzin? and then she *almost* fooled Tenzin’s mental state into thinking she was a natural part of it.

          • Jane never sleeps. She only waits.

Jane once digitally round-house kicked a Trojan virus so hard it started speaking Greek.

Jane has counted to infinity, infinity times.

            #JaneNorrisJokes

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Three Days Grace song coming on: “I am machine. I never sleep. I keep my eyes wide open.”
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Zx6RXGNISk

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

            {cybergroan}

    • This is where the medium goes against the story, to fully understand what’s happening ( I hope) you have to read pages 21 to 23

      • Dusty Coyote

When you reread, Jane’s eye glow when she does things.

Keep an ….. oh goodness…. an EYE out for that.

  • Matt [in Middletown]

    “Uh…hi?”

  • RoninGlen

“Hey, you’re awake! And, uh, half of you is missing.”

  • Michael Corley

What we like to call “Braniac” head.

  • Matt [in Middletown]

Sooooo… how’s that fatpipe connection to Jane?
    Looks a little compromised.
I’m sure it isn’t supposed to bend like that at the connector.
“Uh.. Tenzin? I’m still in here, and I can’t talk to ‘me’ out there.”
I guess we will see on the next update.

    • NickDA

Flexible tubing… rigid connector… like the cat-5 we were discussing yesterday :D

      • Matt [in Middletown]

        I hope so.
        Looks Like TFOCA though.
        *fingers crossed*

        • NickDA

Yeah, kinda the biological/nano-machine equivalent. Its basically a bigger better spinal cord between Jane’s main ball “Brain” and Tenzin’s meat “brain”…

          • Matt [in Middletown]

“Beep?” said the nanobot in response
“Can it spaghetti legs, keep doing what you’re doing.” Jane stated in command voice to the quizzical nanobot.

    • I may be wrong, but I don’t see the problem in making it flexible (pic) . That said, as with 99% of the stuff you’ll see here, the tube is not flexible just because.

      • Matt [in Middletown]

        Looks painful.
        But you know me.
Always trying to get Jane stranded in meatspace.

        • yeah…

Well, I will just stop commenting about this for a few pages :P

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            Yeah.
            No spoilers!
Like I said above: Brick HURTS

      • DrCrazy102

hehe, I’m really sleepy and i thought that was something else just after i read the first comment. But hey, science’s limitations are very flexible in storylines, see most major sci-fi storylines.

      • Pemigewasset ex pat

        Tres Matrix

  • FINALLY YAY

  • Cearb

No offence to Tenzin or any physically challenged, but how is he gonna help with defence without one leg and right hand?
He is certainly right-handed and, no matter how awesome are prosthesis in future, he has to get used to it.

    • How indeed ;) I shan’t answer that, since it’s kind of the plot of Chapter 8 :P

      • DeNitro

Before the next page drops, just saying how impressive this story is. You all are doing a fantastic job keeping everyone involved.

    • And that is something that Daniel and Nick thought about since the very beginning of this story.

      yee of little faith…

    • Well, he does have that super armo–*gets beaten and chloroformed by the creative team for potentially spoiling the solution*

      • Hehe, we never frown on people theorizing. Only if I’ve discussed with you or you get a spoiler on patreon or something would you get in trouble :P

        • Matt [in Middletown]

          I keep my trap shut.
Minerva standard issue Advanced Tactical Brick Mk1 Mod0 HURTS.

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

            lol “Tactical Brick” lol
On sale now at finer Cabela’s, brigade quartermasters and cheaper than dirt!

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Easy to carry and reusable too!

        • Delta-v

That’s not the way I remember it. :D

          • *raises brick threateningly* Lol, the only one I’ve ever really had to scold was Nick. He’s too free with spoilers :P

      • Dusty Coyote

        #poweredarmor

        #PoweredarmorcontrolledbyanAI

        #whydoesn’tjanehaveasuit?

        • Why doesn’t she indeed… ;)

          • DrCrazy102

jane would be a one-bot team. She’d probably woop the death-bot’s rear plating and serve it up as scrap metal, but no story can have an OP robot character and advance naturally like what is happening. Edit: Plus Jane seems quite passive, more of a strategist than a shooter

          • Hehe, yeah, she’d do great. Unfortunately the climate at Minerva is not too friendly towards AI controlled deathbots at the moment ;)

          • DrCrazy102

Strange, might be their best defense if jane took over and just ruled over the puny mea- ahem i mean if jane benevolently took control of the power suits to protect Minerva

    • Lone troll

Why he needs to be a cannon fodder?
He can command without one leg and one arm.

And, secondly, the mere fact that he is alive and in active duty can boost morale of troops by a large margin. Soldiers will know that they can fight deathbots and go out alive.

      • Oooh such interesting points. Must carefully craft a response…

What Tenzin CAN and what Tenzin WANTS to do may not be the same.

Not everyone will be happy that he has symbolically survived.

        • Matt [in Middletown]

For some elements, having a complete team wipe is more in line with their interests.
They may overtly act to ensure it happens.

  • Hornet

Nothing like threatening the lives of children to motivate someone.

    • Delta-v

No beings were harmed in the production of this Chapter. :)

      • Xylas Incarnum

        *Cough* So far *cough*

      • DrCrazy102

Well, besides Tenzin’s own mind torturing him, and then jane pulling a dirty shot like this and having Tenzin’s dignity removed as commentators call “Tiiiimmmmbbbeeerrrr” or “Tennnzzzziiiiiinnnn”. But agreed with @xylas_incarnum:disqus, no physical harm so far, any day though.

        • It’s rough being a fictional character with an audience ;)

I do appreciate the joking in the comment section though, since the comic itself isn’t very joyful or funny most of the time :)

          • DrCrazy102

Seems to be a commentating rule. The more serious the comic, the more hijinks ensue in the comments and vice versa. Some of the Modest Medusa (by jake Richmond) are hilariously trying to use logic on Modest to figure her out in a realistic sense. here, we have more free-rein for our imaginations as paradoxical as it seems for a realistic-style comic.

          • DrCrazy102

OOOoooh, I got featured! Happy day!

          • Delta-v

Without ignoring my own small contributions, a goodly share of the, um, freeformaspect of the Comments coes coiurtesy

          • NickDA

Brick, Rabbit foot… all things in the eventual store that nobody who hasn’t read the comments will understand at all…

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            Heh heh heh.

        • Pemigewasset ex pat

Except for the years of therapy Lillys going to require being flashed by a man. Well, half a man.

          • Rawles Roberts III

You are assuming she isn’t already in therapy for all of the stuff she has already been though. Compared to that, being flashed by ‘half-man’ is almost normal.

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

Now there’s a tragic commentary on the times in which she lives!

          • Nah man, it was totally covered. His sheet draped over him just perfectly :P

  • Tethered Webcomic

    I VOTE FOR ROBOT ARM!

    • You would :P

    • I second this sentiment!

      • Xylas Incarnum

And thirded. Honestly, he’s gonna need a prosthetic to be fully combat effective anyways.
Also, I See an Ai being shouted at for making him see things not actually happening, then calming down once he realizes he’s not inside his own head anymore.

        • Xylas Incarnum

Oh… he’s also missing a leg. Thought that was the case but had to double check a few pages back, so that’s another prosthetic he needs.

Hmmm… this might just be me but I’m pretty damn sure that having two metal legs might be easier to work with long term, though harder to get used to. Something about having matching specs and such… but whatever, the other leg becomic a robotic prosthetic can wait till AFTER it too gets blown off/needs replacement due to being ruined beyond all hope of recovery.

          • NickDA

Hey Hey… its not like only bad things happen to this guy… I mean… okay maybe it is… but you can’t just write off that leg already :P

          • Xylas Incarnum

Well, my mind was more going towards “Both legs being equally strong is better than one leg being stronger than the other.” And given that there’s more deathbots out there amongst other enemies… well it’s not quite unlikely to happen.

          • That is certainly a compelling argument, but will Tenzin agree with you? ;)

          • Xylas Incarnum

Heh, who knows? All I can do is plant ideas.

    • DeNitro

From the future fantasy of a perfect human control of an exoskeleton, it should take neural input from skull or neck directly. So you’re over thinking his lack of arm and leg, once in his full Armored Suit, could be as if he is still a whole warrior anyway.

    • Pemigewasset ex pat

      Roger! (Fistor)
Is it cricket to mention other web comics here?

      • Sure :) Heck, you can even write up a “Why I Read” blog post (check the Blog menu dropdown) if you want :D

  • elebenty

I caught up, Birthday Boy! Hope you are having a wonderful time with your family. (Tangentially: “sleep is overrated” is a lie, but it got me through grad school).

A nice collaboration between the… *counts* …four of you. Only improvement I can suggest doesn’t have to do with writing, art, or publishing. In the code for your buttons make the hyperlink anchor wrap the entire td so that there is a bigger target for the mouse (or finger on a mobile platform). Then the entire shaded cell will be a link, rather than only the word “Previous.”

    • Hehe thanks! Oh @NickDA:disqus, we’ve got some more webmastering for you to do ;)

And @disqus_YXP2bgiR4G:disqus is our first community mod, so while he’s not part of the creative team per-se, he’s an awesome dude to have around and writes comic reviews over in our blog and stuff :)

      • elebenty

        …it takes a village. XD

        • DrCrazy102

What would you call a group of coders? I mean, there’s a murder of crows and a gaggle of geese, but what about coders? A programme of coders? A coven of coders? Will be interesting to see bigger “clickable” areas, since I use an iPad to occasionally catch up with webcomics.

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Well, coders do get referred to as “code monkies” for some reason that escapes my foggy sleep deprived memory, so I suppose they’d be a “troupe of coders”?

          • Delta-v

            “Barrel of Coders”, perhaps? ^^

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Only if they are in a barrel.
But then you’d get strange code conglomerations as they feed off each others ideas.
Best to let them free roam the halls.

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

I thought they were called a Congress? I’m always and forever seeing that meme about Congress of monkeys and that’s why nothing gets done on Capitol Hill blah blah blah yakketty schmakketty

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Well, pro and con are opposites, so progress is the opposite of Congress.
This may explain quite a lot.
            :-/

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

            Clowder of cats…

          • elebenty

A troff of coders? (Geez, I’m old.)

It was mainly our shift to responsive that made me suggest the bigger clickable areas. Anything we can do to make navigation easier!

      • elebenty

I just took a peek at the source code and your buttons are actually items in an unordered list. I’ve never tried to add an anchor that way, so I’ll be watching to see how it turns out.

        • Are you an internet coding wizard too? @NickDA:disqus “supposedly” is (jk bro!, I know you’re good) but it normally too busy with his coding job making us money to pay Seba :D

          • elebenty

:) Hardly, I work with html in emails as a campaign coordinator for a university. Email html is still stuck in the 90s — displays best with tables, etc. I’m getting better at CSS as we are finally going responsive for mobile devices, but I have a lot to learn before I would consider myself a wizard. (That said, I do enjoy coding as well as logic and huge datasets.)

        • NickDA

Yeah I just need to wrap the anchor better… use margins instead of padding or opposite etc.

          • elebenty

Let me know which you end up doing!

  • Dusty Coyote

    BAD JANE.

    Well done.

    Also, called this.

    • I think she is willing to except the repercussions of her actions. They worked, after all, didn’t they? ;)

      • DrCrazy102

Do said repercussions involve a small part of the Jane coding being stranded in Tenzin’s meatspace until he next gets blown up and needs another neural network to save him from himself before resorting to pretending to harm a kid?

        • I can neither confirm nor deny your theory, just merely point forward to later chapters ;)

          • DrCrazy102

Hmmm, *puts on conspiracy theorist hat* classical secrecy denial line … I smell a Moderator cover up. *takes of hat* Ah well, will be fun if Jane does end up stuck, it’ll be non-stop nagging of Tenzin to do things the right way. Now I’m wondering what the laws are for AI and human marriage in DA-verse

          • “Eww, gross!” – Jane and Tenzin both, on multiple occasions. :P

          • DrCrazy102

*Grins evilly* Think of all the little meat-flesh androids that would ensue if it came true! Hehehe

          • Matt [in Middletown]

“But Jane, think of all the pranks you can inflict!” -voice of temptation Matt complete with “I’m evil” goatee.

          • Pemigewasset ex pat

            Tinfoil… ooh, shiny!

        • Delta-v

At this point, we don’t know if Jane is going to leave her nanobot brigade in place or not, and if she did, it would probably require a caretaker subroutine of some sort–possibly a snarky one.

Think of what would happen if she did, and taught Tenzin how to use it. “Know yourself.” would take on a whole different meaning. :)

Full disclosure: I have no idea of whether she will or not–I just know what I like. ^^

      • Pemigewasset ex pat

Oh dear, the “the ends justify the means” argument. “Success at any cost, winning isn’t everything it’s the only thing” is it?
I’m reminded of Commander Adama’s speech at the Galactica’s decommissioning ceremony.

        • Delta-v

Don’t forget my personal favorite. “If you are’t cheating, you’re not trying hard enough.” ^^

    • Pemigewasset ex pat

Agreed. Emperiling a child, bad form Jayne, not at all cricket.

      • You’re assuming that what Tenzin saw was accurate. Check the top panel again as the scalpels go flying to the right…

        • Pemigewasset ex pat

Ah. Apply subtle hints with a sufficiently large hammer & I’ll get the clue.

      • Dusty Coyote

The kid was never in any danger. Thats the point.

  • Barring a suit of custom armor (and rehab period) to keep Tienzin in the actual fight, he is going to have to transition from a “Go do” officer to a “Write plans, develop campaigns at the operational and strategic levels” officer. Something like Command and General Staff College.

Maybe both–why make it easy on him? ;D

Meanwhile, let’s hope intel & diplomacy have identified some fault lines for exploitation in the attacking coalition. “The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy–neither more nor less.” (I think that is #3 of the “70 Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries [by Howard Tayler], but my list has not yet migrated from Palm to phone :p)

  • PS — Thanks for matter-of-factly showing how an amputation might look. it makes one realize that it takes A LOT of compensation to use a present day hook harness rig.

PPS – A probably horrendously belated Happy Birthday!

  • Pemigewasset ex pat

I see he ripped a bunch of wires out, 8 to 5 Jayne is stuck in his brain

    • Hehe, I suppose it wouldn’t be fair of me to take bets when I know the truth ;P

But those ones are actually just EEG wires.

  • SKM

Saw the link for this site from Gone with Blastwave. Love your story so far. Keep it going!

    • Adriano

Ahah you too ? Damn !
But GWTB is a level above TDA, sorry Dan ;p

It’s a bit of a shame that GWTB update so little. But I understand the author well.

      • SKM

Quite a nice story so far, a little bit of Appleseed with a slice of Halo and a touch of Alita.

        • Adriano

          Yup.
          Wait, you read Alita ?
I like Halo universe a lot, even though I don’t know it all and Appleseed is on my “to-watch list”.

  • Adriano

I can only see the gesture of Bellami as a “step away from this monster Lily, I’ll protect you !” speaking of Tenzin xD

Also, you should have named her “Darlling”, a non-speaking orphan in Glen Cook’s “Black Company” stories. I’m only sayin’…

  • And he’s awake! Yay!

  • Citrus Reaper

Gotta say, if I was a little mute kid, and this banged up, bald, soldier-type with one arm and one leg just jumped out of bed, I would be scared out of my mind.

    • theRoUS

“I don’t know about you, but that thing with its claws in the air would scare the piss out of me”

  • theRoUS

Either quickheal or he’s been there a looong time. Nice reconstruction of muscle anchors.
