Essence of Nightshade – Part 6

Posted by / in Lore / 22 comments

[Read Part 5]

Alright, here it is, the last major chunk of the story of Nightshade. This first section is the verdict from Okane’s trial, pulled from the Glaucus DoJ court transcript database. I’m trying to figure out how this whole mess started – at least, as far as such a thing is possible. President Fares and Commander Melkonian were the previous heads of Oculus and Aegis, respectively.  Their histories are interesting, especially Fares’ connections to the Okane family (protege of then Minister Dasha Okane). Melkonian was a classic Aegis’ idealist, a little high strung and prone to anxiety, which as you’ll see, will be relevant.

[Read Part 4]

While trying to determine possible locations for the underground bunker mentioned is Ms. Beshimov’s testimony, I found this article from Panopticon News.  Or should I say, “News,” given the unprofessional nature of the Panopticon.  Most of its content is anti-government conspiracy theories, but, Mr. Offer DOES do SOME insightful research into normally taboo topics.  As long as you ignore the gossip columns.

Essence of Nightshade – Part 4

[Read Part 3]

[Dan Note: Part 4 has a fair amount of very graphic and disturbing language and content of violent, sexual, and just downright disgusting nature. Reader discretion advised and etc.  I recommend some nice cat pictures afterwords.]

In order to understand the fallout of Okane’s mutiny, I’m including this article from the Glaucus Journal of Science and Medicine, since it’s conceivable that readers of my finished dissertation may not have access to the database.

[Read Part 2]

The following is an email correspondence I discovered while searching through the Glaucus Department of Justice files.  It was located in the evidence logs, meaning this email was likely used as part of trial proceedings.  I believe I may be discovering a greater connection between Okane and Nightshade.

Essence of Nightshade – Part 2

[Read Part 1]

I shamefully admit I was relatively unfamiliar with Okane before these investigations.  Luckily, there is abundant information available in the archives, including this transcript of an interview conducted by The Athenian.  And yes, I’m aware of the public perception of them as puppets of the government, heavily censored and spouting propaganda, but I’m also not an idiot and know how to separate fact from talking heads spouting Minervan Dogma.  Regardless, this was a key turning point in the public’s perception of Okane that lead to him being able to do what he did.

Essence of Nightshade – Part 1

[Read the Introduction]

Ok, so I’ve found YEARS of journal entries, and as I go thru it, some context was clearly necessary.  Searching for “Thalia Gordon” brings up very little, but “Okane” is all over the Archives.  I’ll talk more about him as I go, but the first bit here is an old AENet alert dated April 3rd, 2100.

Essence of Nightshade – Introduction and Forward

Posted by / in Lore / 9 comments

I’ve had a devil of a time trying to learn more about Agent Nightshade/Thalia Gordon, whatever her name is.  With a bit of effort, I managed to trace the email I uncovered from Kubek to “Nightshade” to a private, unlisted server.  The security was intricate, but ultimately inconsequential, and on it, I discovered YEARS of data.  Log entries, half-started stories, journals, and more. It will take some time to sift thru it all and pull out the salient pieces of information.  I’ll copy the important bits to my personal folder as I find them.

Below is the first in a series of journals that appear to have been written by Gordon herself.

Twice Chosen, by theleakingpen

I’m very excited to share this short story written by theleakingpen as part of the forum games, planning for the invading faction The Temples of Shénjiào.  It’s from the perspective of a member of that faction, and explains some of the cultural underpinnings of their group, which is heavily based on Chinese folk religion.  Enjoy!

Moving On, by Mark Sharp

Alright! I’m very happy to share this fanfic that my DAD wrote.  Based on his own experiences working as a nuclear power plant operator (and even complete with inside jokes about his old coworkers), he imagined up this scenario, set right when the US government was crumbling near the end of WW3.

Enjoy it, as well as the notes afterwards from the Minervan researcher who is studying it ;)

Mirage – Part 8

Posted by / in Lore / 6 comments

[Read Part 7]

I spent days in a sedated torpor. From the moment I was strapped into a gurney in back of the APC, I was fed intravenously on a numbing chemical diet. The pain that had become my natural state of being was washed away in a cool obliterating wave. I’d stepped outside the language of time, into that unbroken wilderness of being, and nothing mattered anymore. At one point, I thought I might be dead, and decided that I didn’t mind. After the seemingly endless physical and emotional hellstorm I had endured, it was such an indescribable relief to let go of it all. It was the first time I’d ever experienced such absolute peace.
