Minerva: Chapter Eight – Penumbrae

Posted by / in Comic / 57 comments

And we’re back!  Thanks for being patient during the hiatus.  Hopefully you got to see some of the excellent guest pages and fan art that we received, as well as some of the previews to other fine webcomics we posted.

Also, a fun even that happened during the hiatus, we got accepted into the SpiderForest webcomic collective.  A bunch of cool creators and comics over there, mutual support and advice, etc.  There will be some slight site changes (eventually, when Nick isn’t so dang busy), basically adding a banner to other SpiderForest comics you should check out :)

Thoughts on this cover?  I think Seba did a wonderful job, and I’m excited for you guys to enjoy this chapter. We’re having a lot of fun making it.  Lots of good stuff.

And conspiracy theorists, start your engines on the meaning of the Chapter title ;P

EDIT: And check out this new fan art we just got of Tenzin and Viktor!

  • Matt [in Middletown]

Tenzin as a forcibly retired and injured veteran, bitter and angry, the shadow of his rage hanging over him…

    • Dusty Coyote

Heck, I got that and I’m neither forcibly retired nor injured. It’s amazing what bucking the chain of command to do the right thing and then getting ‘up or out’ed will do to you. Considering all the people that deserve to make O4 arn’t this promotion cycle, I know officers and enlisted that are thinking of jumping ship in a bitter rage. If you guys are reading this, let the hate go. All it does is chew your soul. Took me years to get over it. (Edit: And im not totally over it)

  • DeNitro

Tried but can’t ignore the literal and possibly obvious, Penumbrae. This chapter is about a stage when events, places, and characters exist in a “lesser or uncertain degree” than before.

Still, I’m just hoping he’s having an raging daydream about getting payback once fitted with working bionics.

    • Matt [in Middletown]

Ghosts of regret in the background.

    • I think the cover may be a bit deceptive till you see page one ( that last part where “he’s having an raging daydream about getting payback once fitted with working bionics.” )

      • DeNitro

Now see what you did, I was stuck repeatedly checking in the hope page one was a early release. SebasP, your art and Dans story has made this a true addiction. 👍👍:-)

      • Matt [in Middletown]

And then the super twist, Tenzin takes up botany, horticulture, and genetic modification and breeds hideous mutant plants that consume the invaders.
        The end.
        Except for overlord Tenzin.
[I dunno, just had my coffee..]

        • DeNitro

Dude,, switch to Hawaiian Kona or something, that Kopi Luwak is giving you psychotic weasel dreams of a plant uprising. Bet your hearing mantra now,, “Eat Red Berries, Eat Red Berries, ,,,” LoL ;-)

  • Deep meanings blah blah blah this is the chapter with the *SPOILER* shower butt in it *SPOILER* that’s all you need to know

    • Jen, revealing privileged information! How could you! ;P

    • lots of “limp beefcacke” on the pages I’m doing right now

  • Obviously, this chapter is where Jane helps with the creation of automail for a crippled Tenzin, and penumbra refers to the significance of the moon’s shadow relating to alchemy and…
    What?
    Crap. Wrong story.

    • Dang it now I thought of the little girl and the dog… “Big brother? Play with me?”

      • …I’m drawing uncomfortable parallels with the little robot that Jane was last moving around in.

    • NickDA

That is such an amazing show/book… We need Mustang!

  • Adriano

Are edits from TDA pages allowed as fanart ?

AND AWESOME COVER DUDE ! WOOHOO !!!

I didnt know though that Jane went all dark side. I assume she’s the one pushing Tenzin’s chair, right ? :P

    • Sure, edits probably count as fan art :)

      • Adriano

        Yay ! thanks !

PS : What if there is some sensitive subjects going on ?

        • If sensitive or potentially offensive, just email it to me first :) I’ll decide whether to post it or not, or just enjoy it myself ;P

          • Adriano

Hehe, as you wish, m’lord !

          • DrCrazy102

Oh no, what has been unleashed?! ;p

          • Adriano

            Me ? ;P

          • Adriano

            Done !

  • Dusty Coyote

Oh good. For a minute I thought Tenzin had finally gotten over being a sourpuss.

    • Heh, nah, he’s got at LEAST another chapter of that ;P

      • Dusty Coyote

So there’s a chance it will never happen? A chance of this becoming an anime?

        • I can promise that he will certainly get over it eventually ;P

          • DrCrazy102

Is that in the epilogue? Tenzin gets over it all in the epilogue with the words “shove it all in a fire*?

          • NickDA

Its kinda like Neon Genesis Evangelion… you think you understand it, right up until episodes 25 and 26… at which point you’re left just … what… the hell just happened???? Our plan is like that… its actually happy grandfather Tenzin surrounded by all his buddies and family and friends and grandbabies etc, just telling a severely messed up ghost story.

          • lol. SURE. Just like that.

          • DrCrazy102

“Severely messed up ghost story” = biggest understatement ever and new story for camp-fires everywhere!

        • I also think this story would make a great anime.

  • Mwahahahaha. It’s fun being one of the only people who knows what’s going on in the upper left.

    • Matt [in Middletown]

      There he is, get him!
      / kidding

      • You’ll have to catch me first! *poof*

        • DrCrazy102

Ghost? Is it … could it be?

  • Judging by the title, I shall make some Bat Guano Crazy Theories (or BGCTs). As we know, the word “penumbra” refers to the area of partial shadow during an eclipse of the moon or other celestial object. Penumbrae, of course, if the plural form of that word.

BGCT 1: Judging by the artwork, which depicts Tenzin’s usual merry-go-round of joyful mental anguish, which looms over him and dominates the pages, we can surmise that this chapter will similarly demonstrate his persisting trauma overshadowing him, rather than consuming him as it did during the previous chapter. If we take the idea of an eclipse and apply it to the comic, once can argue that the eclipse began during the massacre, in which the first penumbra began to appear on the moon, which in this case, is Tenzin. The subject of Tenzin’s moon, however, is deferred to Jennifer’s expertise. Continuing with the eclipse of the moon, the time spent in his coma represents a full eclipse, whereas this chapter will represent the decline of the eclipse, the second penumbra, hence the plural form of the word.
BGCT 2: While the artwork is less indicative of this, given the events of the comic, the penumbra may be alluding not merely to Tenzin, but to Minerva as a whole; however, instead of a declining eclipse, this one is advancing. Let us examine the details. First of all, it is strongly implied Minerva is currently one of the more prosperous regions in the world. It is also, evidently, under attack. The deathbots we saw Tenzin rumble with are just the beginning of an onslaught and our good friend the Flashdrive Guy seems to be planning what we will scientifically refer to as Shady Dealings. Combined with the circus that was the meeting Jane infiltrated, it would appear that Minerva is the moon and whatever forces that made the Deathbots are the impending shadow. We can assume more than one Deathbot is on its way, hence the plural title.
BGCT 3: As anyone who has taken an astronomy class or checked Wikipedia will tell you, an eclipse of the moon is caused by Earth’s own shadow. We can surmise from this that the biggest threat of this chapter will come not from the distant enemy, but from within, whether it be from Tenzin’s famously sterling mental health, or from Minerva’s ignorant bureaucracy. The full eclipse, therefore, will be entirely the fault of inside forces. Outside forces will watch them burn themselves to the ground and possibly roast marshmallows on the embers.
BGCT 4: Tenzin gets a word-of-the-day calendar this chapter. All the words start with P for some reason. Viktor is still dead.

    • Dang, those are some good theories.

    • I just wanted to point how cool is to be part of something that can make people elaborate theories about it :)

    • NickDA

“however, is deferred to Jennifer’s expertise” lol

    • DrCrazy102

BGCT 5: A second, third, etc. “shady dealing” (scientifically speaking) group(/s) comes into the area of play *cough, death, cough* along with Flash Drive Guy, as penumbra also refers to “a peripheral or indeterminate area or group” (Google), so it could be referencing multiple “shady groups” as we call them.

    • DeNitro

I like what you said,,, but why is it I can’t stop imaging you saying all of that frantically in one breath? ;-)

    • Chris

Where is the one where Tenzin finally accepts his role in life and becomes the ultimate killing machine?
Just look at him… testing the crushing ability of those space wheels!

  • Citrus Reaper

Yay! We’re back! Time for some incredibly depressed space-marine action!

  • theRoUS

In astronomy, the penumbra is the region of only *partial* occlusion. So perhaps whatever shadows may lie ahead are only paper tigers.
(What do you call that kind of amputation? Rhomboplegic?)
Idolona et tenebrae omnes usque deorsum.

    • Oooh, latin! And not just Lorem Ipsum like I thought at first ;)

      • theRoUS

“It’s ghosts and shadows all the way down.”

        • Google says: “Wraiths, and darkness was all to the bottom.”

          • theRoUS

Remember, languages are *not* code for one another. And Latin has a smaller vocabulary than you might think, so there are often multiple meanings for the same phrase. (‘not code’) The words that *are* available have to stand up and do tricks. Errr, play multiple roles.

          • I forgot to include this face. ;P

          • theRoUS

I’m not humour-challenged at all. I’m just very, very literal. :-)

  • theRoUS

The glowing eyes and the apparent raptor anisodactylic claws gripping the chair make me wonder if Glaucus is going to be part of the TAG here.

  • Adriano

At least there’s something to push his wheelchair, lol
