Our Website Stack: Core Framework - WordPress

Wordpress Dashboard

We’ve had a long and fruitful relationship with WordPress. We’ve been playing in this sandbox since back when WordPress was considered just another blogging engine. It has been with great to watch as it silently grabbed up a large part of the CMS market right out from under Drupal and Joomla. While those guys continued with their absolute shite-fest of code - and I fully welcome any Drupal fanboy’s to start a flame-war with me in the comments, I ran the Engineering Process Group and was a Senior Project Manager for a Drupal shop and I still have the nightmares - WordPress just worked along in the background turning their awesome core into an extensible CMS system.

Custom menus? check! Custom Content Types? check! Easy templating for the custom types? check! Clean database structure? check! Caching libraries? check!… the list just goes on an on. The one beef is still a gradual progression to requiring object oriented code instead of function oriented code, but other than that they have been spot on the money for the last few years in their upgrade path.

So yeah, our site runs on WordPress, we use WP- Total Cache, Custom Content Types, WordPress Multi Lingual, and a few other choice plugins power this baby. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be packaging up some of our custom code into some choice little plugins. This will be our attempt to feed the community that has helped us out all these years. Our first plugin to be on the lookout for will be “Enhanced Post Links” and this will help to clear up the waters on how to easily get a “first” and “last” post link instead of just the standard “next” and “previous”.

Do you have any experience with WordPress? Any pains and problems you’d like us to help troubleshoot? Its not our day job anymore, but we’ve been working freelance for enough years that we still have that urge and need to troubleshoot stuff… so drop us a line and give us our junkie fix for the day!
