About the Novel

Categories: Novel

The story of the Demon Archives originally began as a novel before being converted into a graphic novel/web-comic. Every Friday I will upload the novel version of the story portrayed in the comic pages for that week. Each Novel post will be titled with the chapter title and a number (eg The Crucible - Part 1) so you can easily find it. We hope that you will read the written version of the story as well, because there are some things that can’t be portrayed well via the comic medium (and vice versa). This really will complement the story as seen in the comic.

I welcome your comments on my writing. Eventually I hope to be able to publish this story as a novel as well as a graphic novel, so your feedback is much appreciated.

Greetings readers! As you can see (if you are reading now) there is not much in the Lore section yet. I thought that I’d write and explain what it entails and what sort of goodies you’ll be able to find here as time goes on.

The Lore section is where Nick and I get to expound more on the history and stories of the world we’ve created, beyond what you will see in the comic. Book 1: Minerva covers a relatively small area of the world, and deals mostly with the events of the 22nd century, so you won’t find out a ton by reading the comic what events lead to the 22nd century being the way that it is. In the Lore section we will give you some of the history. Most of the posts will be written from the perspective of a 22nd century historian. We’ll see how long it takes you to figure out who :P

One of our main goals with this section of our project is to involve you, our dear readers, in the creation of the world of the Demon Archives. As Nick and I establish the fundamental dogma and history of the world, we will invite you to write short stories in the world. There may be a competition with prizes or your stories may get included with the comic when we eventually self publish. Look forward to that :)

For now, enjoy the history and lore of this world we’ve created.

Welcome, internet, to the Daemon Archives! Starting today we’ll begin uploading content from the project. While we already have several pages done, we want to create a decent sized buffer so we never miss a post date. So today, I (Dan) want to explain what our project entails and how it began.

The Daemon Archives had its beginning in the darkly creative corners of my brother Nick’s brain. Unformed thoughts and ideas about the singularity and a post-apocalyptic world mixed and merged, unable to escape. Frustrated at his inability to express his story in text or art, Nick invited me to help him transfer the world he had created in his mind to the real world. Beginning in early August of 2011, Nick and I tried our hands at writing a short story in the world. The results were ok. We’ll post them up this week for your viewing pleasure. Our rough stories did serve the important purpose of being the beginnings of a much better story.

Over the next 4 months Nick and I outlined the details of our new world, and began forming the basics of a story to introduce it. Come January 2012. when I enrolled in a Creative Writing: Science Fiction class taught by Brandon Sanderson, I was ready to begin writing our story. Our one real assignment in the class was to write 50,000 words of a novel, on which we would get comments and feedback from peers and from Sanderson himself, so I was excited to try to write the first novel of the Daemon Archives.

I have to say, it was a lot of fun. I was preparing for medical school at the time (and am in medical school now), so it was great to be creative in a very different way. Fairly early on, my writing group and I realized that my story would best be told as a graphic novel, something that Nick had wanted to do anyways, so we began to contact comic artists. We hosted a competition in order to select two artists (2 instead of just 1 for reasons that would spoil the story now) in first quarter of 2012, and began planning and production of our comic by the beginning of summer.

This brings us today, when I am happy to officially welcome you to the Daemon Archives. As of right now we have several pages done and ready to upload. We’re slowly adding content, however, in order to create a buffer and never miss a posting deadline. Over the next couple of weeks we’ll take you through the whole course of the creation of the project, letting you see initial sketches, stories and outlines. I’ll also explain more about what our story is about, and where we hope to take the project.

Cheers… and Welcome to the Daemon Archives!

Dan
