Snow

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

Yesterday, almost adding insult to injury, we had a decent sized snow storm in New Jersey. Luckily, we didn’t lose any power, but a lot of people either still don’t have power back from Hurricane Sandy or they lost it again, meaning they had to suffer in the cold, which really isn’t any fun (I’ve done it). It did make for a very beautiful landscape last night when I looked out of our apartment window. I should have taken a picture, but I didn’t. Oh well. I’ll just steal someone else’s photo and call it good.

Skinning faces, car repairs and elections - a tale of Tuesday, November 6th

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

This blog post will be fairly brief because I need to write up and finish, I mean, I need to edit the Lore article done by an obviously real historian. From the future.

Right. Well, I just wrote and uploaded this post and it disappeared on me. So I’ll try to write it again.

Organically grown armor?

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

Armor has obviously been important for warfare for basically forever. Making the best, most protective armor is a worthwhile research goal for any military organization. I recently read an article detailing a new, organic source for high-strength armor.

Electricity! Glorious Electricity! Oh, and launch is today.

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

This morning, after spending the night in our neighbors’ warm basement, we went back to our apartment briefly to grab some things for school and the power was back on! Yay!!! It had apparently been on since around midnight, and the fridge was cold and the apartment was warm and it was awesome! Hopefully it doesn’t disappear on us again, because I am excited to have my home back.

The Avengers and High Definition TVs

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

Last night I finally saw the movie The Avengers. It was a great superhero movie, with lots of good action and stuff. No real complaints about the movie. What was weird for me was the TV we watched it on. We were at a friends house with a pretty hi-def TV, and the movie was an Amazon instant download rental thing, so it probably wasn’t the highest quality, but whatever it was, the combination led to a strange movie viewing experience for me.

Singularity thoughts part 3 - I’m being replaced by a computer

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

Not really, but it seemed like a catchy title. As an update, I still don’t have power (curse you hurricane Sandy!) but kind friends do. They also have a warm basement. Friends are awesome. :)

Anyways, the post. I read during my intermittent internet usage this week an interesting article about IBMs Watson learning medicine.

Hurricane Sandy

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

This week I experienced my first severe natural disaster, when Hurricane Sandy came ripping through New Jersey. Growing up in Arizona, the only disasters we ever had were fire and drought, neither of which personally affected me. This time though, I am right in the middle of it all. My town didn’t get hit horribly bad, but we still don’t have heat or power three days after the storm. I had to go onto campus to get electricity, charge phones, check internet and such.

Money is weird

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

As I was driving to medical school this morning for my two practical tests of the day (histology and anatomy), instead of rehearsing in my mind the branches of the axillary artery or the dermatomes of the lower leg I was thinking about how money and wealth is weird. May not be the best use of my time but it was interesting. The basic question/thought I had was “How is wealth created?” It led to a kind of deep, abstract and a little scary thought that my wife didn’t really care to hear at 8 o’clock in the morning.

Singularity Thoughts - part 1

Posted by / in Blog / No comments yet

Seeing as our comic is advertised as a “post-apocalyptic singularity” web-comic, I better share some of my thoughts about the singularity aspect. For those who don’t know what singularity means, in science fiction it basically means the point in time in the future when computers/robots gain self-awareness and sentience. After that humans either become cyborgs or the computers take over the world. Basically.
