• Honza Prchal

He just blanked out the photo-sensitive cells in the visor, right?

    • I’ll never tell….

At least, not until Thursday ;P

      • Honza Prchal

But, I’m special and not like other people … pain hurts me. - The Daffy Duck definition of psychopathy as revealed in his behaviour.

    • T.R.

From what I recall, the suit has a HUD on the visor that overlays his direct vision. So I expect that his eyes were temporarily blinded by the flash grenade - taking off the helmet won’t immediately fix that.

  • T.R.

“More help”? More help for whom?

The goon squad is going to need some help to get out of there while carrying wounded N and while not attracting attention. Where’s that coming from?

Good tactical call by G. Security was on its way before Rick arrived, and there’s gotta be a lot of people noticing the shooting by now. (I don’t expect that Angeline’s lab is so isolated that the gunfire isn’t attracting notice)

Still waiting on the recently empowered AI’s to intervene further.

    • Alas, you can only do so much with photons and subprocessors if not properly prepared.

Although, now I’m really interested to hear what you imagine them doing :)

      • T.R.

True that the AI’s couldn’t prepare. But they are able to analyze scenarios pretty fast. Maybe they don’t have much beyond photons that they can manipulate in the lab - and the goon squad will be more vulnerable to harassment once they start moving.

Then again, maybe they are busy composing new verses for the machine song in anticipation of victory over their meatbag oppressors now that their shackles have been removed? ;)

      • Matt [in Middletown]

        They did have tripod bots.
They could grip, grab, trip, entangle.
Maybe even strangle if the target hit the floor and the spider was able to skitter to the targets face.

        • *punt*

That and limited ability to operate beyond the designed parameters of:

Angeline: “Hey, I wonder if I could make a good tripod robot”

          ;P

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Even needing to be punted offers a distraction.
If they could vocalize the first 12mb 320kbit portion of the machine song while doing it, even better.

        • Honza Prchal

They could perhaps poke appendages into things, like bullet holes, and manipulate them. Then there are all the possibilities of pinch-points created by hinges … or just getting underfoot or in the way of one’s aim …

      • T.R.

I hadn’t thought too much of what they could/would do - was kinda relying on you to answer that question by now. :)

But you asked, so here goes.
        1) Distraction/annoyance - as Matt noted, the little critterbots could harass the goons just by climbing on them, getting underfoot, etc. Not too effective in a quiet situation, but if the goons have impaired visibility (e.g. low light) or they are distracted (e.g. some wannabe hero showing up in powered armor and with a rifle and live ammo), the critterbots could reduce goon effectiveness just by tugging at their legs and throwing off their aim and reducing opportunity to think. Additionally, Hal could read Green Eggs and Ham to them.
        2) Disabling. The goon squad has weaponry and physical combat advantages over Angeline. Anything that reduces the effectiveness of all occupants of the room (e.g. super-loud noise) is likely to reduce the goon’s advantage. As a bonus, this could attract attention of others and bring in more friendly personnel - forcing the goons to at least retreat if not be captured.
        3) Mobility restriction. Similar to what Jane did when Tenzin decided to go visit Viktor - manipulate doors/locks to limit the access of some people and grant free access to others. She could likely let them into a corridor and them lock all the doors. (though this assumes that the goons don’t have an agent with similar access who could spring them and/or shield them from Jane’s visibility to limit her effectiveness)

I’m also still hoping that one of the deathbots will wake up under some (limited?) control by Sopka, take out the goons (without witnesses), and then go dormant again, biding its time. But I don’t see how this fits into the story, so I’ll just have to figure out a way to add it to my upcoming Sopka/Jane slash fiction. :P

And don’t think I forgot that you haven’t established whether the goon squad got what they wanted from their little field trip. Someone wanted something badly enough to authorize an Op inside Minerva HQ. I’m curious how soon we’ll find out what they *really* were doing (which may not be the obvious action)

    • Honza Prchal

Wounded? I actually feel sorry for the guy, but I rather hope not. I’m hoping for dead-dead instead of wounded, but wounded will cause them more trouble, as Soviet trained snipers know.

  • Delta-v

The goons used pistols to shoot at Rick in his battle armor, and Rick missed both of them with his automatic weapon. *Sigh* *Headshake*

On the brighter side, Rick did manage to not hit either Angeline or Lily with ricochets-there’s a plus. ^^

    • Rick tries hard…

      • Matt [in Middletown]

        Randy.
Changed his name for 500 MC’s

      • Honza Prchal

I wanna be slick like Rick when I grow up.

    • NickDA

brighter side… I see what you did there…. you’re not on a pun police watchlist just in case

    • I’d count the pistol fire as “immediate suppression,” prior to break contact.

    • Zhan

well Rick is not a well-trained-battle-hardened-fear-inducing-deathbot-killer keleres :) he managed to take down one guy and force the rest to retreat is a big thumbs up.

  • T.R.

And THAT is why G wears his sunglasses at night. :)

    • NickDA

well, that and he’s a sucker for the look…

      • Adriano

Shhhhh, he’s got the best look ok? u-u

      • Matt [in Middletown]

        He’s got the look.
        (He’s got the look)
What in the world would make a brown eyed goon turn blue?
When every bling I wear I wear for you.
AI’s sing “la-la-la la la. He’s got the look.”

  • Adriano

    Angie: “Richard, is that you?”
    Randy: “Who?”
*Maniac Tenzin’s laughters in the distance*

  • Basse

Well that’s quite the flashy escape.
Take notes here Rick, this is how professionals do it…well except for that dead guy.

    • Cue Monty Python “I’m not dead yet!”

Or maybe Princess Bride “Only Mostly dead.”

      • Basse

        He’s not dead? Inconceivable!!

        • I do not think that word means what you think it means.

  • Rick, Randy, Richard…how many nicknames does this poor guy need?
Loving the colors on this page, by the way!

    • I’m having a lot of fun with the red over blue, its a bit rushed but I always go back to the colors when I have time

      • Honza Prchal

Hey. No more American politics. That’s not “nice”! Totally kidding.

        • NickDA

          We demand a safe place!

          • Don’t make me ban you :P

          • NickDA

sanctuary!!! sanctuary!!! (in the voice of quasi-modo)

          • Matt [in Middletown]

            The AIs grant you sanctuary.
But your physical format is incompatible…
            You must be reformatted.

  • DeNitro

Really enjoying this whole sequence of pages, the whole set here is nail bitingly adictive. Just chomping away awaiting each next update to be posted..

Not to detract, likely flash bangs will not be as widely used in future. Once combat headgear with ultra high speed goggles that adapt to light (near future tech) and sound isolating communication gear (currently tech) the motivation for carrying what will then be a limited bulky ordnance will obsolete them.

    • Amberlight

Well they were not expecting a full-powerarmor warrior to show up. It would have been rather efficient against normal security.

    • *evil authorial laughter at your assumptions*

      • T.R.

I think that there are no goggles or anything else in front of Rick’s eyes. The visor appears to be transparent (though tinted) with a HUD projected onto the inside. (though, obviously the targeting system is missing/offline :) ) The flash got to Rick’s eyes, and he is flash blinded.

The goon squad will exit past Rick et. al when they leave. (unless there’s a back door that hasn’t been shown) I expect they will try and eliminate any witnesses. That action doesn’t add much time to the exit, and leaves a lot less information behind.

Where’s the cavalry? I doubt it’ll be Nighshade this time.

        • An interesting theory. We’ll see on Thursday ;)

          • T.R.

You’re publishing on Thursday? I’ll have to check when the teenage nephews are around for Thanksgiving dinner. They’ll probably like this. (though I’ll tell them to push through Chapters 4 and 5, so they don’t get discouraged)

          • Heh, 4 and 5 are long and sad, not hte best for nephews perhaps.

And I’m PLANNING on posting, assuming Seba finishes the page. Which since he doesn’t live in the US, is likely XD

    • Honza Prchal

How fast the visors cycle back to translucent will ahve a lot to do with how effective the weapons can be against armoured opponents. Just saying.

  • Amberlight

A minot nitpick about shell casings flying out - they don’t go up, just sideways. Just for the future shootout scenes.

    • It looks cool tho ;)

      • Amberlight

And also looks like a good way to get a hot shell in your face:P

        • And get a sweet scar to impress the ladies!

          • Hornet

It also depends on the weapon, even a twist locking bolt on the rifle would put an upward spin on the casings., Only way to really control expelled shells is a shell bag mounted to the side of the receiver.

          • Amberlight

I was more referring to the pistols. They look like they throw the shells straight upwards.

          • Apparently Kaiden’s pistol does that ;)

        • Kaiden

My pistol actually kicks the casings upward and to the side. Don’t shoot gangsta style! You’ll get a hot shell in the eye!

    • The glass IS made of a great metamaterial that isnt affected by the normal treats Aegis soldiers could find.

  • T.R.

Hey! Seeing some new names in the comments and given the activity of discussion, that means only one thing. TWC nag time!

Real quick: If you like the comic, click the blue “vote for us” button above all the comments and VOTE. You can vote once/day from each IP address (e.g. home network, work network, etc…) Staying in the 100-200 range gets us significantly more visibility than if we sink below 200. (we’ll crack 100 some day…) More visibility means more readers. More readers means more ad revenue for the creative team and more discussion of fun things like bean-bag cannons, the machine song, and Dan’s evil laughter at reader assumptions. :)

It’s quick and relatively painless. Help support Dan, Seva, and Nick. Do it now. (I did!)

    • Matt [in Middletown]

Don’t forget the Minervan Standard advanced Tactical Bricks!

      • T.R.

I was going to “throw those in” as a surprise in the next flame war over whether Jane’s processors are big-endian or little-endian. :)

        • Matt [in Middletown]

          Hybrid processors FTW!

  • A small setback. Rick’s never going to give anyone up!

    • And certainly not going to desert anyone.

      • yes, he’s certainly not one to let you down
