Chapter 11: Page 6 - Workstations

The ladies, hard at work.

2 announcements today. First, since you all obviously like Post-apocalyptic comics, you should check out the Scurry Kickstarter. It’s an extrememly well made comic, centered on a colony of mice (yes, mice) after some sort of apocalyptic disaster got rid of all the humans. I enjoy it a lot, and you might too XD

Second, I’m participating in the Spider Forest Comic of the Week this month. So every week I’ll share a link to two great comics from Spider Forest you should check out :)

cotw2016_sombulus

A fun world-hopping adventure about a girl who talks to machines, a magical scavenger, and an over-zealous paladin.

Aliens, magic, super powers and Death himself. Keith’s life just got complicated.

Check them out!

Did anyone ever tell Angeline about quarantine and rules of handling unknown materials? No? Well, no surprise, they must have been scared shitless of her and didn’t dare.

    • She quarantined it! … in her lab… ;)

      • T.R.

I’m still putting money on something happening when they power-up the communications chip that SOPKA added to the design for remote management and diagnostics.

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Is her lab an isolated Faraday cage?

  • Had Seba make an edit to replace a 2D projection with a 3D one, because it looks WAY cooler, and is about as equally probable scientifically ;)

    • Amberlight

Well she has what appears to be a circular projector on top and as we semi-decided there must be a translucent mist of magnetically-contained particles for lasers to paint picture on. Legit enough:D

    • T.R.

The 3D version *is* cooler - though I think having the hologram rendered so close to the physical ‘bot gave Angeline a headache by the 4th panel.

  • Matt [in Middletown]

The AI all gathered around to look at the alien machine that had plagued their sister Jane and her meatbag battlewagon Tenzin.
“Bet we could protect our meatbags from the other meatbags if we…” Eddi3 trailed off, the thought hanging in the nanoarchitechture making up his physical self.
Then an alarming idea, what if this thing they were looking at was a program trap.
Or worse, somehow blared to the world where they were?

    • DeNitro

A carefully hidden thought flashes through supposedly dead electronic mind, “Oh, do come closer my pretty. I am but a harmless, defenseless bit of of deathbot in your AI lab. ”

Matt is onto something,, If our current “primitive” technical society can inbed electronic bugs in toasters and clothing irons to infect and corrupt a foes computer systems. What as yet undetectable method would be used in future, especially on a object that once it falls into your oponents hands, they will take to their own best labs for reverse engineering. 😨

  • Hornet

Was I the only one that was worried her own machines would be turned against her by the connection with death-bot parts????

    • Nah, sounds like Matt and TR have similar theories XD

    • Amberlight

That would be extremely unlikely. SOPKA would need to have extensive knowledge of the software of the machinery Angeline is using, as well as Minervan anti-virus programs to write a virus good enough to do something like that. Not to mention that Jane-level AIs are as easy to hack as human brain. i.e. not possible in any short amount of time.
And, well, I hope Angeline isn’t an idiot and is not plugging all those parts in the general network. Physically quarantined machinery will prevent any god-level virus from doing pretty much anything.

      • DeNitro

Wouldn’t use humans as that fool proof example..
Well.. They don’t actualy call it “hacking human minds” but if you look, all eras of human history is filled with examples of personality cults and government’s having very rapidly influenced entire populations via propaganda and other manipulation into changing their outlooks and actions. Startling how rapidly the majority will begin to do something they found previously offense or unthinkable if the society around them has been made to apear to support and expect the change. Very few are willing to stand on principles, knowing doing so makes themselves targets, social outcasts, and in possible danger.

Futility of man-made security against mankind..

“Once someone develops a idiot proof box, someone else will develop a better idiot..”

        • Adriano

I think Amber was more speaking about hacking the human hardware (aka brain) whilr propaganda hacks the software (aka mind/spirit)

          • DeNitro

            Good point.. Yet…
Your only one more human weakness from a physical (hack) effect on the brain. Certain drugs and minerals have a profound effect on function and operation of our chemical-electric brains. Exploiting that wouldn’t surprise any of us..

          • Adriano

Brain hacking would surely exploits drugs and drug state inducing techniques (such as hypnosis) in order to facilitate the work of malware. But hey it depends what form will take brain interfacing and cyberspace.

        • Amberlight

What I was implying is that you can’t just jack in Jane’s code and run a virus that would drastically alter her mind in a short time. Even if something like that is possible it will take a long time. Enough for it to be treated or at least for Jane to be quarantined.

  • Sebastián Piriz
    • “Now you listen here! No more murder sprees! You’re making my whole field look bad.”

      • Sebastián Piriz

“ughh I dont know why I even try”

      • Sebastián Piriz

this calls for a caption contest!

        • Adriano

Yes! Mwahahahaha! Time to activate my editing powers!

    • Matt [in Middletown]

“I have a mind to STRANGLE you!” -Panel 1
“You go to your room and think about what you did!” -Panel 2
“I really need a drink.” -final panel

  • Kaiden

Is that “Dummy” from Iron Man?

Also, I love that Jane (I assume it’s Jane) is helping color.

    • Sebastián Piriz

its more a real life robotic arm

      • Kaiden

Still, I’m waiting for it to douse Angeline with a fire extinguisher.

    • Don’t forget Jane is being debriefed ;)

      • Kaiden

Jane is also a very powerful AI. I would imagine that being in two places at once is easy enough.

  • Nothing to see here, just Seba being awesome as usual.
It’s nice that Lily gets to enjoy being a kid despite all she’s been through. Maybe she could give Tenzin a lesson or two in healthy coping skills (though he seems to be doing much better so far).

    • Adriano

I’m not sure that fighting two Deathbots at once can count as “doing much better”

    • Chris Kotthoff

Think the fact Lily isn’t reacting at all to the Death Bots is a little scary in it’s own right, think you would remember the machine that murdered your entire village and dismembered a rescue team right in front of you at any age.

      • Maybe she doesn’t recognize the Death Bots. It’s possible she never got a good look at them. It’s also possible that it wasn’t even the Death Bots that attacked her village. After all, she was hung on the wall with a trap that looks too delicate to have been set up by those hulking machines. Maybe human soldiers ransacked the place first to lure Minervan forces in and the Death Bots were deployed later?

        • Chris Kotthoff

True, the video showed human attackers and I doubt a Deathbot could set up the booby-trap that Lily was strapped to but I’m still thinking we are getting allot of indications that Lily is repressing allot of emotion or something fundamentally even more unhealthy. If Lily is getting some sort of therapy as part of her daycare (I can’t imagine Minerva not thinking of that) chances are she will be fine (unlike Ten who kept sucking it up until he imploded)

          • I wouldn’t put it past the creators of this comic to have something sinister in mind for her. You could be right.

          • You wound me :P

  • Chris

Mother and Daughter coloring time! The best time.
