Chapter 4: Page 18 - Shattered

Posted by / in Comic / 37 comments

Ok, first things first, we made a sweet sweet gif of this page, but it is too big for WordPress to upload. So click here to see it, unless, you know, you have epilepsy or something :D

- UPDATE - you should see it below this text but above the comments - UPDATE -

Nice, no? I was going to put in on our Patreon page, but then it lost its gif-ness. You can still go check it out and pledge, allowing us to do more cool things like this. Maybe I should make a funding goal where we can afford to do more gifs and animation? Would that entice any of you? ;)

Anyways, please vote for us on TWC, and while you’re helping us, you see those social media share buttons above this? Maybe use one of them?

Chapter 4 Page 18 - Shattered
  • Nate the Robot

Amazing fish-eye perspective on this one!

    • I’m glad you liked it :) Did that GIF work for you?

      • Nate the Robot

Ah, I didn’t notice that when I first read it. Yeah, it works, looks great! Saw your WU post and didn’t understand it, now I see … you weren’t just making a gif, you made an ANIMATED gif.

        • Yeah, I forgot that it’s just a image file type due to my artistic ignorance :D

          • Nate the Robot

Never before seen publicly, enjoy this animated GIF I painstakingly drew a frame at a time in MS Paint years ago for a friend’s JAVA game: http://natetherobot.com/images/AnimatedWorker.gif

          • Luckily it looks like only 8 frames or so?

          • Nate the Robot

Yes, but I crammed a WHOLE lot of creepy into those 8 frames!

          • Urge to feature your creepy gif so that EVERYONE sees it ;)

          • Nate the Robot

Ah cool, I just found my entire image library … although that was the only animated one I did. Actually, it looks like I had a village with a simple (4 frames total) fire animation ready to go, although I never ended up making the gif from it.

          • Ydo Ucare

This guy looks like he’s creepily deciding where to bury the bodies…

    • I agree. That really, really is well-used in this. That’s the kind of effect that can become over-used in less-capable hands. But here it is expertly employed.

  • Delta-v

More flower petals falling. Different artist, different kind of flower, same concept? And the gif is AWESOME!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it. Nico was aiming for some of the same symbols that Matias used, although neither really cared about what type of flower it is exactly, just the flower motif.

      • Delta-v

Dream symbolism is inexact that way since the subconscious is concerned with themes, not minutia, so the type of flower wouldn’t matter unless it had additional cultural significance like a lily (death) or a rose (love) in European-based cultures.

I’m assuming that the falling petals signify loss, mostly of the innocence of childhood.

        • That is a perfectly valid assumption to make :) The beautiful thing about symbols is that everyone can pull something different from them :D

          • Delta-v

Oh, but I’m quite certain that I have the only possible interpretation, and no one, no one I say, could come up with a better one. Doesn’t everyone agree? :D

          • That’s so…dogmatic of you. Almost fundamentalist ;)

  • Tantz Aerine

And I’ve caught up. This is all so powerful and so very sad, as well. Well done. Can’t wait for the update.

    • Glad you enjoyed it! We’ve got RSS, social media, or just checking back every Monday and Thursday ;) I look forward to hearing more from you :)

  • jerry mcmasters

Love the expressions on the little girl, the contrast between the shock/dying faces and the flashback joy/love. Very strong.

  • Odival Quaresma Neto

    Just marvelous.

    • Thanks Odival, and welcome to the Demon Archives commenting section :) Do you mind me asking which (if any) of my promotional strategies brought our comic to your attention?

      • Odival Quaresma Neto

Not at all. A friend of mine told me about your comic and here I am. I believe he found your comic linked in Goblins or Gunnerkrigg Court webcomics, not sure wich tough.

        • Cool! So not only did that ad in Gunnerkrigg work, word of mouth is starting to happen. Awesome! :D

    • NickDA

Welcome welcome, and thanks for the praise!

  • Outlawkion1

Woah… I like this page A LOT. Especially the GIF version. It really has an epic feel to it.

    • NickDA

Yeah, I’m playing around with the site-redesign having subtle gif effects in a lot of the pages… I think it could make the web experience really unique.

  • Marisa Brenizer

Woah now. That perspective! And nice job on the gif, as well. It really brings the drama of the scene.

  • Mike South

That kind of necklace-bracelet-whatever-breaks-as-loved-one-dies can drive a protagonist batty. :)

    • Indeed it can :) BTW, Mike, where are you coming from? I always like to know which ads where are driving readers that actually comment :D

      • Mike South

I saw your comments in Fleuter’s AMA [for any curious onlookers, thats’ Ben Fleuter of derelictcomic.com], clicked through to your reddit postings and found it that way. Later in the AMA you linked directly in response to an inquiry, and I immediately felt that special combination of sheepishness and geek pride that I found it the hard way first.

        • Oh sweet :) I wish more people had been in on that AMA. And you wear that geek badge with pride, my friend :D

  • Excellent use of a .Gif here…

    • NickDA

Yeah, we keep on wanting to do like a “remastered” digital edition… its going to have to wait until its “done” though I think…

  • lr17

You could be nicer to the people who have trouble with flashing lights and such. At least you gave SOME warning. I’m not one of those people, but my wife is. So I’m not feeling the smiley.

I don’t think the flashing does anything for this otherwise impressive picture. It must have taken a lot of work to pull that off.

    • Ooof, sorry! Hopefully it wasn’t too flashy.

It was more just something fun that the artist wanted to try, so I figured why not and shared it :D
