Chapter 4: Page 26 - Interlude 3

Posted by / in Comic / 20 comments

Today’s page is another overheard conversation between Tenzin’s dreams. Just so you know that time is passing in the outside world ;)

Yesterday we posted another spotlight/interview, and Tuesday a crazy cool fanart featuring over 80 different webcomics’ characters.

Also don’t forget that you can help support us in a variety of ways. There’s always our Patreon page, where different monthly pledges will earn you monthly rewards like access to more sketches, WIPs, pages in advance, hi res downloads, etc. And if that isn’t financiall feasible for you, you can always just like my public posts, or share/tweet it to raise awareness :D

Also, please do me a favor and click and vote for my entry in the TWC art contest this month. I’m tying for 1st place currently! :D

Oh, Angeline, I love it when you talk snarky. <3 And the MD (Internist?) is no slouch, either-BONUS!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! OMG!!! So, says the abelist to the half-conscious misogynist. Does Angeline have a tumblr account, because, I’d swear she’d fit right in. And the doctor’s, counter point… I am actually LOL’ing with watery eyes. This is page is so full of win.

  • Delta-v

Hm. I can see where she’d get “asinine”, since she’s angry at him for avoiding his checkups, but “misogynistic”? I haven’t seen any evidence of that. Not liking one woman (her) doesn’t make him a misogynist any more than not liking mutton would make someone a vegetarian.

    • NickDA

      mmmm mutton… to the store!

      • Delta-v

        Eeew! Lamb=tasty. Mutton=mouthful of rancid lard. >P

        • NickDA

Just have to cook it right… slow BBQ’d/Smoked so all the fat drips away… mmmm

    • Also, what Angeline says and thinks is likely to say more about her than about anyone else ;)

      • To be fair, Tenzin has treated Angeline dismissively based on her gender in the past: http://demonarchives.com/chapter-1-page-5-confrontation/ He might not be a misogynist, but he is definitely sexist.

In this institutional setting, it’s really not a good idea to call the Head of the Oracle Project (or any project for that matter,) “Miss,” (particularly someone from a culture where institutional titles are everything,) “sweetheart,” while explaining that you will not “babysit some of (her) pussy-footed apprentices on a trip out to the ‘scary’ desert,” especially when she designed your weaponized toys. So from her perspective as a person in a position of power, her impression is not entirely unjustified, even when it comes across a bit much. However, her referring to Tenzin as a cripple, shows that she isn’t really in a position of moral authority or respect, either. Tenzin might be sexist, but Angeline has her own indefensible prejudices as well, as well as a lack of human empathy. This might explain some of Tenzin’s dismissive behaviors, which adds some depth to him as well.

These characters are complex and flawed, and that’s what makes them interesting to watch.

We haven’t seen him interact with any other adult women yet (except his mom), and because he was angry at being sent on a mission without adequate rest he was lashing out at an available target (her) and being as insulting, offensive, and unfair (she had nothing to do with the mission, and they weren’t her apprentices since she works in a different division of Glaucus) as he can think of being. Childish? Yes. Misogynistic, when he’s not talking to her? Perhaps. He may have been tailoring the insult for maximum effect on the target. (Military training, and all that.)

Angeline strongly reminds me of roboticist Dr. Susan Calvin from Isaac Asimov’s book of short stories I Robot, a person who was uneasy around and dismissive of humans, but quite at home with AIs. They probably would have similar bedside manners. :)

I absolutely agree with your last line about complexity and flaws. Doesn’t Dan write well? :)

          • Yes he does. This page was especially wonderful.

          • OH you two :D I’m looking forward to the coming chapters where the dialogue and the discussions about important, meatier topics gets to shine a bit more :)

Just a small clarification in case anyone misunderstood or misunderstands the term “pussy-footed”-it means timid, fearfully cautious, like a cat. Not a sexist reference. [I’m not rebutting this comment, just figuring that some people, e.g. with English as a second language, or not familiar with that idiom’s roots, could misunderstand.]

You know, at first I thought my computer wasn’t loading the page right, but now I see what you were going for with the blurred words. Clever.

    • Delta-v

See what you can get away with if you tell people that it was deliberate? :D

      Oh, wait…..

  • Legendary Sisters

I can hear you, you know!

  • Citrus Reaper

Whoo! I’m back from Wifi-less hell! I can read DA again!

    • :D Welcome back! We’ve got a good…70+ more pages for you to read?

        Glad to hear it!
