Chapter 4: Page 59 - Interlude 6

Posted by / in Comic / 46 comments

Interlude page! I love these eavesdropped conversations :D

New sequence starting on Monday (except for supporters on Patreon who already have the next 2), by Seba :)

Also, I make an impassioned plea for anyone interested to join in the fun of our Siege of Minerva game. It’s shaping up really well, but to be honest, the Russian readers (courtesy of Amberlight and his awesome Russian mirror) are WAY more involved then ya’ll over here. They’re showing you up! ;)

Also, I could really use some more fluent English speakers. Some of the factions don’t have very many players, and one doesn’t have any. So if you’d like to help tell the story, plan an invasion of Minerva, and have fun with other readers, check out the game. You can review and choose a faction to join here.

  • Ydo Ucare

Maybe I’m just slow, but why does it say “What’s that now?” Did something happen?

    • We were trying to indicate an sudden and rapid increase in heart rate. If you’ve ever been in a hospital, that’s accompanied by a lot of beeping and sometimes alarms, which surprised the Commander.

      • Delta-v

        BEEP….BEEP….BEEP….BEEP. BEEP, BEEP, BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP.

        • Adriano #WR

Sounds like music to my hears

  • Seriously, join the game! Make us proud! Validate my many efforts in producing it!

    • Adriano #WR

I got a new friend maybe who’s interested in the game ^^

    • Matt [in Middletown]

Well, can’t have a faction “Ravers” [bandits] as we just saw them get wiped out.
And any rabbits feet would not be a faction but a junk item with no known uses.
      Hmmm.

      • Indeed no “Ravers”, but we do have Fremen-esque nomads, Mongol Hordes, Angry Russian, Cannibalistic Chinese, and Radical religious Caucuses :D

        • Keith Schiffner

what? no “save the gay black baby whales for tiamatt” (stalks off in a huff)

          • If you’d been part of the “Pre-Planning” weeks ago you could have made a faction be however you wanted :P

          • Delta-v

Keith, are you from Colorado? You sound like my neighbor after a long “mellow” evening. :)

          • Keith Schiffner

Not even close…same time zone. ;)

        • Adriano #WR

          Turkmen are Fremen style !
They rock the sand ! (rock, sand, prfffrtch)

        • Demetri Ermak

I could help with the translations, but I’m still rocking myself on to start the book translation I wanted to do.
I like how people with actual war expertise are showing up! That’s awesome.

          • It’s been pretty cool so far. @disqus_8XKHAw4roh:disqus has been rocking leading and translating for the Russian Faction so far. But I’d love to see you over there just playing even if you don’t have time to help translate :)

        • Matt [in Middletown]

Angry DRUNKEN Russians, complete with Go Pros?
[Go Pros may or may not work, it could be a cult thing. Society did collapse after all. Might be some cult out there that worships the great YoooToob.]
Oh man, mental images, horrible mental images.

        • Matt [in Middletown]

And I just misread “Mongol Hordes” as something else.
          o_O
          Me an my typo/dyslexia abilities.

But that WOULD be terrifying to run across in and of itself.
          Say hordes without the D.
Now watch the mental horrors unfold before your eyes.
I apologize for any resulting nightmares.

  • Matt [in Middletown}

“I HEARD THAT!” welcome back to the land of the semi conscious, Tenzin.
    Have some coffee.

    • And a brick? ;)

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Well, bricks would be Viktor’s thing.
Tenzin’s keys, plus creepy murderous rabbit foot, showing up would be rather starling.
“Hey, I just dreamt about those-YAUGH!”

  • Rise and shine, Sleeping Beauty. We’re almost out of flashback, so get off your duff and start doing story things.

    • NickDA

Hahaha… ah but the next nightmare sequence is crazy… and crazy informative… he still has a few zzz’s to catch

  • Michael Corley

Experimental treatment. That never goes horribly wrong. :)

    • Adriano #WR

      “Experimental treatment being developed”
      What could go wrong ?

  • Adriano #WR

    Nico’s going to miss me a lot…

    • Delta-v

He could always comment. Then we could all keep talking to him. :)

      • I hope he will :) Also, if we ever need a second artist for later in the story he’s going to be our #1 pick, if he’s available :D

        • Adriano #WR

          Cool :D

      • Adriano #WR

Talking with him is a thing, watching his beauiful take on Demon Archive is another thing, no ?

  • Delta-v

As I understand the game, tt’s a turn-based tower defense-style. Is it pure strategy, or is there an element of chance (i.e. diceroll) involved? Do the rules permit skullduggery between factions, or are the attackers obliged to co-operate? And finally, is the setup foreach turn given pictorially, or text description, Zork style (You see an invitingly open plain one kilometer deep and 2 and one half kilometers wide with a curtain wall 10 meters high, topped with concertina wire and twin autocannon mounted gun emplacements spaced 30 meters apart along it’s length as it stretches the full width of the canyon…)?

A few observations: 1. Since only one action plan is submitted per faction per turn, the size of the group isn’t as significant, so even the timid Yanks have a chance to outdo the Russian hordes-get in there, you sissies! 2. Altough the concept isn’t new, this is by definition a beta, so any participants are on the cutting edge, and no one else will be able to say that. 3. This is a perfect event to invite friends to join like Adriano did-or at least get them to “watch”.

    • I’m planning on involving some element of chance when I feel it would be helpful, or to not be picking favorites (both teams shoot, who wins? etc.). But for many things it will rely on the strategy and what seems most likely sort of thing.

Skullduggery, alliances, breaking alliances, espionage, sabotage, etc. “It’s all fair in love and war” ;)

Each “turn” will involve me basically saying what the results of the previous turn were. Then each faction plans it’s actions for the next turn. It will most likely be text description style (similar to your example), unless I get someone who wants to draw things all the time :)

So yeah, turn-based play-by-post giant Risk game, basically :D

      • Delta-v

        Sounds great! (BTW, full disclosure-the plain is a minefield.) :D :D :P

        • LOL. You would. BTW, I saw you made a log in. Are you going to play/join a faction or just watch?

          • Delta-v

Since I occupy a slightly unique position around here, I thought I’d fill in where you needed me the most. I just wanted to make sure I knew what was going on first.

          • Aw thanks :) You can really take your pick. Faction 5 is the most understaffed at the moment, followed by 2 and 3. Basically any faction except for faction 1 :) The Russians have that covered. Good thing I have god-mod powers or they might actually win ;)

          • Adriano #WR

Omg Russians are all super-badass and good at tactics.
            It’s like when you’re russian you’re born for war…
            Is it too stereotypical ?

          • NickDA

Not as bad as your “All Mexican people like to cook tacos” statements… so we’ll give it a pass I suppose :D

          • Adriano #WR

            Omg I guess you’re right !
            Tank you xD

  • Alanna

Does the game require checking in every day? Cuz I’m not so good at that. I read the new pages and vote but that’s about it.

    • Hehe, yeah, it would. I don’t think you’d enjoy the game, though, sis ;)

Comments however, you could do. If you ever have a thought on a page you can certainly share it :)

Oh wait, you and Cory have played DnD and stuff, right? Maybe you would enjoy it. Or maybe Cory would! :D

      • Henrik Svantesson

It’s DnD-like? I wonder if there’s any news of what happened to Scandinavia - they’re unlikely to have been nuked directly (no nukes themselves and don’t have any particular feuds with countries with nukes), but would be hit badly by the climate-based fallout, but their goverments generally have their shit together and the country is very good at technological solutions. Maybe turn towards nuclear energy, Thorium Reactors in particular as uranium is limited, and indoor farms on an industrial scale once it’s covered by permafrost?

Not as bountiful energy as other places (or very much more so if they get it working), and their initial military is not very developed, AND they’re likely to suffer badly before they develop an energy solution (possibly using Norway’s oil deposits to manage in the meantime), but it means they live where few others wish to, and later their ability to live sustainably in a place is completely divorced from the amount of sunlight it receives.

(Make Sweden Great again! And by Great I mean in landmass. >:3 )

        • Have you read “Stand Still, Stay Silent?” Post-apoc set in Scandinavia, they survived better than the rest of the world XD

Wargame was forum play by post, hasn’t been active in years tho. Too hard for me to run (but someday, with community gamemasters…)

          • Henrik Svantesson

I have not, I should look it up!

Fair enough, you might be able to find some using Roll20 or the /tg/ board? They love shit like that, especially if there’s a chance of getting things illustrated.

          • I run pathfinder games on Roll20 XD

  • Neil Kapit

“Experimental treatment”? That doesn’t usually end well…
