Chapter 4: Page 6 - A Merciful End

Posted by / in Comic / 38 comments

Happy Monday all! Even if this page isn’t happy, Matias did a great job with it :)

I’ve been having fun this past couple of days figuring out how Project Wonderful ads work, and placing a couple of ads around. I’m bidding on 3 today on some other cool post-apocalyptic webcomics, so hopefully people who read those will be interested in ours :D

I hope that you saw some of the awesome content we uploaded last week. We’re getting back on an update schedule for the non comic content, that kind of goes as follows:

Monday - Comic

Tuesday - Guest Content/Lore article

Wednesday - Wednesday Spotlight blog post

Thursday - More Comic

Friday - Lore/Science article

Saturday - Weekend Sketch blog post

So make sure that you keep an eye out for this other fun content. None of it is required, but if you take a look around, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with some of the information on the world that is available to you.

Standard Vote Request link, but you can see our ad is back up again if you vote today. Also, I’m going to be uploading a new incentive image today :)

  • Airen - name or foreign word? 1000 MCs for whoever figures it out first :)

    • Amberlight

Finding answer was easy but I feel bad for getting all the MC just because I read the page before the others do:D

      • You do have a major time zone advantage over most of the readers ;)

Tell you what, if no one gets it by the time you wake up in the morning, you post it and claim your MCs :D

    • Zack

Woops, didn’t know if I was supposed to reply here so I’ll copy and paste. >.> Sorry for the spam! D:

It has meanings in Chinese and Japanese, roughly meaning “spouse” in Chinese (or “lover”) and “Perfect Love”, “soulmate”, or “compassion” in Japanese (maybe - conflicting results, but I’m willing to guess it’s close to the Chinese word since there are many appropriated words from Chinese in Japanese).

Coincidentally, it’s also the name of a type of grape. >.>

      So it’s a foreign word that’s also a name? :D

1000 MCs to Google if I’m right.

      • Zack

Well, a foreign word that could be used as a name. >.>

      • Hehe, it doesn’t matter where you posted it, but I deleted the other one for prettiness sake.

Google-fu is accepted and rewarded, since that’s how I picked the word (http://translate.google.com/#zh-CN/en/%E7%88%B1%E4%BA%BA). I was aiming for the Chinese for ‘beloved’, which is one of them on the list.

So @disqus_1xD70Sfv4W:disqus, you get the 1000 MCs! Have you been around long to know what that means?

And I was aiming for it more as a term of endearment than a name, but it might as well be both, since you don’t see her again anyways.

        • Zack

I FEEL LIKE I JUST GOT CALLED UP ON STAGE ON “THE PRICE IS RIGHT”. *victorydance*

Sort of? They’re points I can turn in for extra content and such, right? I did a whole night marathon of this comic a few weeks ago and I’m forgetting how exactly they work since I skipped over a large swath of comments.

          And D:, poor NPC wife.

          • Glad you enjoy the being Featured feature :)

That’s the general idea. In fact, Amberlight just asked to cash some of his in (he’s been helping us with the Russian Viktor uses) for Seba to flesh out a sketch of his. Nick has plans of eventually making a ‘Bank’ to officially keep track of MCs and actually use them for discounts on merch, art, etc.

I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it so far. How did you find us, btw? I like to know which ad/social campaign is working :D

          • Zack

Rad! Is there a general list of what point values and their uses?

I somehow manage to find comics made by med students (if I read that comment correctly somewhere in all of the comments in perpetuity). I’m just starting school this summer, so maybe it’s a “misery likes company” scent. :P Truth be told though, it was most-likely a pay-per-click ad I saw on another comic or a straight link on the “if you like my comic, I recommend these!” bars that some comics post. Those are the only ways I find new comics. If I was to hazard a guess, it was probably from Dresden Codak given the whole singularity thing.

          • There is not yet a master list, since the aforementioned system isn’t set up yet. Currently I give them out in 1000s for things like what you just did, or for help with foreign languages. Once there’s an actual system for keeping track of and using them, I might actually incentivize sharing on social media with them. Still up in the air.

Good luck with school! It is miserable sometimes, but it can also be a lot of fun. Do let me know if you ever have any questions I might somehow be able to help with :)

Alas we aren’t listed on Dresden Codak, but man it would be awesome if we were :D

          • Zack

Very cool. I’ll just go ahead and horde my points then until I can think of something cool or I can be a good sheeple and find something on a list I like. :) Thank you again for your generosity towards your fans! <3

And thank you so much! I'm currently traveling for 2.5 months in Europe so I can start fresh and have some time exploring first before getting stuck for 6-12 years (residency/fellowship depending). When it comes down to the grind, I will totally reach out to you! I will be sure to ask for tips on living tips (like managing emotional stress) when the time comes.

As for Dresden Codak, just know that you've at least poached one of us even if there is no direct link there. I'm sure more of us will find you as time goes on. If I ever see your link anywhere else on the comics I read, I'll let you know.

  • NickDA

Totally gonna have to get my blacksmith friend to make me a “Tenzin’s Dad’s” knife…

    • Jason Clayton

totally should get my brother to make one in his shop class XP

      • NickDA

I would pay for that :D just saying… since my blacksmith is in Argentina, and that would take ages to get here if he could make it… So… I pay for three? one for me, one for you for finder and one for your brother for any costs? (only 1% joking)

        • You have a blacksmith in Argentina?

          • NickDA

Yeah, like old school coal coke and hammer style… it was pretty awesome some of the stuff he did for me… now, a machine shop will be quicker and actually able to use “better” steel… but its not the same from a “doing” point of view.

  • Zack

It has meanings in Chinese and Japanese, roughly meaning “spouse” in Chinese (or “lover”) and “Perfect Love”, “soulmate”, or “compassion” in Japanese (maybe - conflicting results, but I’m willing to guess it’s close to the Chinese word since there are many appropriated words from Chinese in Japanese).

Coincidentally, it’s also the name of a type of grape. >.>

    So it’s a foreign word that’s also a name? :D

1000 MCs to Google if I’m right.

  • Delta-v

Another “Dorito”. Has anyone figured out what they really are yet?

    • Hehe. I assume you’re referring to the object in panels 6 and 8? If so, the truth is a powerful image/symbol for this nightmare and the following :D

      • Delta-v

Yep, an since this one landed in a puddle of blood, I don’t think I’d want to be around anyone who got hungry thinking about THAT. O_o

        • Ydo Ucare

Aaaand I didn’t see this comment until after I left my other comment and now I feel gross. For the record, I was referring to thinking about normal Doritos making me hungry, not about weird worm-like things in blood. Ick.

          • Delta-v

It’s okay. I realized you hadn’t seen the second comment because you didn’t reference the blood. I’d have no problem being around you, and if we ever meet, I’ll even buy you a bag of Doritos. :)

Origami c. elegans was an interesting guess, but these things aren’t all that wormlike from other perspectives. Check out some of the previous pages in this chapter for a bit more help. :)

    • NickDA

What’s with Doritos and this reader base… the other day people were gonna crush em up and snort em… hehe

But what could it possibly be if not a Dorito (which its not btw)… no guesses?

      • Ydo Ucare

We’re hungry. At least, I am. And Doritos are delicious. It’s not our fault that Tenzin’s having a flashback to triangle-Dorito land.

I think it looks like an origami c. elegans, but I’m fairly certain that’s not what you’re going for…

  • Wow. Just wow. Both compassionate and yet cold. I could easily picture her saying., “It’s OK, and thank you”. What I’ve seen of this world so far, that would be appropriate and expected. “The Road Warrior” is starting to look like a church choir practice compared to the way things have degenerated in this world…

  • Michael

    Heavy!

  • Legendary Sisters

    Man. That’s rough.

    • Yeah. It was interesting, another reader read this page and saw the dad as a mega misogynist, treating his wife like property to dispose of at his will. Totally not what I was going for, since my line of thinking was he was trying to protect her from a horrible death with a swift one instead, but now I wonder if I’m secretly a misogynist or something. I’ll have to ask my wife ;)

      • I read it that he wanted to spare his wife any indignities at the hands of these monsters.

      • Madame Mildew

Hmm, late to the party with my comment, but my first thought was pretty much “WTF? Maybe she would prefer being alive even if it meant a brutal gang rape?” Because rape isn’t a fate worse than death. I didn’t really think of the possibility that they wouldn’t let her live afterwards though, so perhaps he did do her a favor. Still, I’d have been more comfortable with it if she had given a sign to her husband that it was her choice too.

        • Yeah, while in my mind, he knew these raiders MO was “brutally violent and lethal gang rape”, I wasn’t advocating that his decision was right, just that HE thought it was.

And her reaction in panel 2 was supposed to kind of indicate that she understood, while leaving it a bit ambiguous.

I appreciate your thoughts and hope to see comments from you again :D

      • Madame Mildew

Still, I wouldn’t say “mega misogynist”, I’m sure he believed he was doing something honorable, whether he was saving her from death or not (since many places still view a sexually assaulted woman as “ruined” or “damaged goods”)

  • That dude is hardcore.

  • Really powerful panels right there.

  • Jens Richard

    Keyser Söze

  • Citrus Reaper

I’m reminded of Reavers all of a sudden. Anyway, this page is fantastically powerful.

  • l33tninja

That is serious. I don’t know if I could do that, but I totally get his mindset here.
