Chapter 8: Page 1 - Ghillie Gal

Posted by / in Comic / 49 comments

Hey, ho! New page!

Also, I’m doing an AMA over in a subreddit if anyone reddits and wants to ask me questions there :) I may even give some spoilers ;P

EDIT: I’m starting an email subscription list to get weekly updates of the new stuff we post, if anyone is interested. This will also include some exclusive rewards, art, discounts on stuff from our store, etc :D

  • Amberlight

    Modular weapon system, huh?

    • Easier to carry one modular weapon than a sniper rifle AND a normal one ;)

      • Amberlight

That’s not so easy to translate. I hope “Invisible gal” will be close enough:D

        2015-10-01 17:54 GMT+05:00 Disqus :

        • Sure thing :)

        • Adriano

          OMAGAD

I had to see your comment now to realize she got a STEALTH CLOAK

          How dumb of me >.<

      • TheRealRazgriz

I know this is the future and anything is possible, I mean look at Tenzin’s Micro Mecha suit and his AI companion (just realized huge halo influence potentially lol) but by current weapon “standards” slapping a longer barrel on a rifle doesn’t make it a “sniper” rifle. They’ve tried it before and it doesn’t work lol. Usually a rifle is built with a particular thing in mind, say sniping.

        • Yeah, we’re doing a little bit of “future sci fi wizardry” here. I am not a mechanical engineer, and don’t want to have to design a new gun, but it seems at least plausible to have a modular rifle with different functions :D

And man, I apparently REALLY need to play Halo XD

          • TheRealRazgriz

Yeah all you have to say is “future magic” and I’ll agree lol! (I just have been a “gun guy” since I was little) AND DEAR SWEET HOLY HELL YOU’VE NEVER PLAYED HALO!? There are so many similarities in story here lol Mech suit bad guy, check. Female AI that is somewhat sarcastic, check. Unknown enemy attacking from a far at first so you have no idea wtf is going on but then later get to actually go head to head with, check.

It is also a great game series as a whole.

          • But I have no game systems :/ The newest I have is a PS2.

That plus I doubt my wife would be ok with the violence in the games, not with my toddler around ;)

          • TheRealRazgriz

Oh ouch! PS2 was the best console ever anyhow.

          • Adriano

            Omg you’re like me ! *high-fives*

Long live PS2. Have you played first Killzone ?

          • DrCrazy102

Don’t forget the Star Wars Battlefronts; 1 & 2! Plus there’s gonna be a new SW Battlefront soon! *runs away squealing like a fan girl*

So disappointed PS3s weren’t back-compatible or they would have been the bomb

          • Adriano

YES YES NEW Battlefront ! *orgasms*

        • At least I did detach part of the body of the weapon too, not just the barrel :)

well, you’ll get to see why if they can make such a weapon, it is useful here. (almost) nothing is random here :)

          • TheRealRazgriz

I assumed it was purposeful. And something that was capable of doing that currently would be almost universally used because it would be super useful!

  • Adriano

    Modular weapons best weapons !!!
    At least coolest u.u

  • Ooh, she looks cool and interesting!
How you gonna kill this one?

    • I don’t kill ALL of my characters :P

      • NickDA

        yet….

        • Everybody dies eventually :P

          • Chris Kotthoff

            How many from old age?

          • What, you want spoilers? ;P

          • Matt [in Middletown]

Jane, from extremely advanced old age.

          • DeNitro

Hopes are the future remembers snipers work in teams for many good reasons. One is looking down a scope allows the other 90% of world a serious advantage. Even a electronic friend might keep that task to more than a short footnote in a storyline. :-)

          • true, but this character is not a sniper.

now, I’m curious: in real life, are there not sniper soldiers that carry a sniper rifle just because they could need it?

          • TheRealRazgriz

Usually not, they have their standard issue equipment and thats about it. They may have a Designated Marksman Rifle, but that is by no means a “sniper” rifle, it just somewhat fills the in between role. Snipers are always accompanied by a spotter (to my knowledge, it technically is possible to self spot but it highly unlikely). But this is a fictional world set in the future, so you say what is and isn’t!

I Am not sure if she is breaking down her rifle into a different configuration to make it a CQB or standard assault rifle, or is she breaking it down just because she’s breaking it down.

          • Yeah, you’ll get to know her better, but she’s not a sniper as much as someone who wants to snipe ;)

          • TheRealRazgriz

I eagerly await the introduction, that hiatus was killing me btw.

          • I guess the “lone warrior” type is just a trope but it never happens in real life

          • TheRealRazgriz

yeah its just a trope, but it doesnt mean it cant happen in the future, or in your universe. Different and desperate times, call for different and desperate measures.

          • well, I was thinking about the Sniper-spotter, I may be talking from the ignorance here, but an advanced AI could be a spotter right?

          • TheRealRazgriz

An AI would probably make for a better Spotter anyhow, being able to calculate trigonometric equations SUPER fast and be directly integrated into the weapons sight-system. The possibilities are literally endless. Hell there are sight systems currently that have built in rangefinders and based on the caliber of round it can accurately calculate bullet drop, and then marks it on the reticle so you can accurately place your shot. Imagine you have an AI to compound that sort of functionality. Able to track windage, rate of speed of target, humidity…it’s YOUR world so you get to set what is and isn’t possible :D

          • DeNitro

I was hinting that a AI would be a great range finder, but spotters are more than that. Watching for targets and threats in all directions keeps combatants alive longer. Didn’t mean to create issue, forgive my musing on future tech that might enable that “Lone Wolf” to function.

          • Well, isnt that the big question hen talking about AI? if they don’t destroy us they’ll make us all useless ( or not? )

          • DeNitro

Sorry on this drawn out explaination, AI with out Sapience is a loyal friend. The “AI” buzzword in our current age, is generally intelligent programming for a limited specific task. We are far away from truely useful general AI sentence and self awareness. Once there, it in essence would act as a hyper intelligent dog. It may act/sound human but is flawlessly loyal, devoted to master, and will die to protect them. Other than letting others control your “AI Doggies”, the most ommous danger is in our stupidity of spending all the extra effort on developing past even more limitations until development of a AI with Sapience of its own. Only that specal category of AI would decide it is better off without human beings around. You can argue there is exceptions, that makes great stuff for storytelling ;-)

          • DeNitro

FYI Matt, I know I drank too much coffee before that, sorry.. LOL

          • Rawles Roberts III

The main quandry about AI is that we don’t know WHAT it is going to act like. Will it even have feelings? Will it understand loyalty? Will it even give 1 penny’s worth of ‘thought’ to us at all? The following link to this paper on AI development ethics covers a lot of the concerns regarding AI: http://www.nickbostrom.com/ethics/ai.html

Given those limitations, if we want a ‘useful’ intelligence, it must, by nature, be limited to understanding the task we need it to perform, and therefore not ‘true’ AI.

          • DeNitro

Separate this entirety from the story a moment, I firmly believe writers and artists are expected to be creative and not constrained by technology, biology, physics, Etc.

The quadry your referencing does not exist when wisely developing super intelligence of basic Sentient level. Certain some wanting to play god, will always argue there is benefits to offset risks of full Sapience over basic Sentience. Yet the difference even if hidden behind programmed humor, mannerisums and personallity traits are so deep, there is never fear someone would argue for “The Rights and Freedoms of Sentient AI”

          • that’s why I love sci-fi, a simple question could be answered in a million different ways :)

Lets say that somehow we manage to keep a Turing passing AI within certain parameters, so it doesn’t blow out to become a god in a couple of days (that’s part of D.A.s story).
Said AI, would have all our mind capabilities, but it would also have a lot more of raw power to use, far better “senses” and virtually all the information available in the world.

That AI, I think, would be a better as a pilot, marksman, or just anything that a man can do

          • Amberlight

If I was to guess, I’d say that this woman is more of a lookout/forward scout keeping an eye on the enemy position rather than a sniper on an assassination mission. As for the rifle, it makes sense for a scout with chameleon cloak to use a marksman rifle, and it won’t take all that much of a future-magic to turn good assault rifle into a mediocre marksman rifle.

          • Adriano

“I like my guns how I like my ennemies : broken down”

          • Matt [in Middletown]

“Designated marksman” in a squad, yes.
He doesn’t have a “sniper rifle” per se, but he does have a “DMR” version of whatever he is issued, either an accuratised AR, a modified M-14 , or still another semi-auto rifle that has been modified for the DM role.

      • “…it must be cheerful,
        ’cause not everybody dies!”

Filker Erica Neely, in the eponymous filk, responding to the accusations that all the characters she sang about had to die. Narratively, that is.

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Someone has a terrible computer printer accident..

    • To survive in this world a character needs a legendary level of badassery ;)

      • Adriano

        Like Tenzin ! Yeah !

  • DrCrazy102

Ghillie Gal: “Hmm, not today. Bit uncomfortable shooting someone while they got their backs turned, especially while I snipe/scout”
*walks away, steps on land mine”
    Gal: “Shi-“BOOM

So dies another character after only one page of badassery!

  • Lirik

Will be there any dialogs in this chapter? :-)

  • Chris

Looks like that guy is totally giving Ghillie Gal a thumbs up.
