Chapter 4: Page 13 - Warning Bell

Posted by / in Comic / 40 comments

A new day, a new page by Nico. :)

In case you don’t remember the non-comic update schedule, right now every Tuesday we’re uploading another entry in the collab piece, The Undying Voice. Every Wednesday we’ve been uploading an interview/spotlight with someone cool. Fridays I sometimes upload a Lore entry or maybe a fan art (if I’m lucky). And Saturdays I upload the initial sketches corresponding to the week’s pages.

There, now you know to come back and look for these. Some will be posted in the Blog section, and some in the Extras section.

Anyways, hope you enjoy the page. What are you thinking of Nico’s style so far? I like how he conveys a sense of action and movement.

  • Viktor Denisov .

There’s something incredibly amusing about the image of monks going to battle with firearms.

    • These are desperate times… :)

    • Delta-v

At this point we don’t know if classical Buddhism has survived unchanged or if some “adjustments” have been made, and even today, Buddhists are attacking Muslims in Myanmar (Burma) and attacking both Muslims and Christians in Sri Lanka. Apparently it has quite a bit to do with the views of the local monastic leaders. And also, what Dan said. :)

  • Jason Clayton

Well this isn’t my Easter egg, maybe the next page?????

  • jerry mcmasters

Ah thank goodness they’re not just running to go grab from a rack of spears and clubs.
I must say the detail put into the weaponry on the gunrack has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated! I see an AK47 and an M16, and a handful of either semi-automatic or bolt action WWII looking rifles. Annnnnd the dude with a spear.

    • They may love peace, but they love not letting their whole town of people not get raped and murdered more ;)

Thanks as always for your comments and thoughts, Jerry :)

    • Bryan Raines

Great point about the gun rack.. it was so well done I hadn’t even noticed it. That is how you know time was taken to focus on it because the reader doesn’t even notice XD

    • Yup- a couple paratrooper-mod M1 Garands, and at least two KAR-98K Mausers as well. I’m impressed; a lot of artists (at least, those unfamiliar with weapons) will just draw vague gun-ish shapes. I love it when folks do their homework.

      • Yes…I totally did all my homework and didn’t just recommend that Nico draw “some old guns” on a rack… ;)

Once again, all the props go to the awesome artists for paying such attention to detail.

  • Amberlight

At first three frames I was “are they going to fight armed raiders with shao-lin ancient martial arts of fist and spear? Come on!” And then “Oh. Alright. Monastic rigorous training and a lot of guns got to do the trick”.

    • Hehe. Yeah, we’re being a little too hard sci-fi for martial arts to beat bad guys with guns and etc :)

      • Amberlight

It’d be fun if Minerva would find this monastery and give monks some sci-fi armor. That would be some badass Sho-Lin.

        • Well, they kind of do with Tenzin, eventually ;)

  • Bryan Raines

I seriously love the movement in your panels. Your action scenes are always amazing. I also love the panels themselves. The first 4 are very dynamically shaped which helps create the feeling of quick action taking place.

    • Yeah, Nico and Seba both love to play with panels, which I think really helps the visual appeal and makes the action stick out more.

      • Bryan Raines

When I am working on my comic I really try to think about the panel layout, but Nico and Seba are on a whole other level. You all are doing a great job and I can’t wait for the next page!

        • NickDA

When we started talking to artists we actually had asked them about a “FreakAngels” panel format, which was very very rigid and pre-defined. After seeing their art I’m not more glad that we went away from that.

          • Demetri Ermak

I’ve read FreakAngels and liked them a lot. Did someone on the crew work on the FAs?

          • Nope, Nick and I have just read and admired them also.

          • NickDA

I could only wish… it was just one of the best online “graphic novels” in my opinion… and Ioved the idea of what its static panel layouts could mean for the web… but, the action as portrayed by Seba and Nico is amazing and their creative panelling is really fun to read.

        • Sebastián Píriz

Thanks a lot Bryan :) if you want I can recommend you a few books I read some years ago about making comics

  • Love the wide angle shots. It + extreme foreshortening really does add to the action, doesn’t it?
I think the artist of this section is my favorite so far in the story.

    • Foreshadowing? You mean you can tell already that this is going to end with rainbows and unicorns frolicking in a meadow? ;)

      • Hipopótamo

Hey, don’t spoil it for me! I’m expecting my dose of unicorns!

        • Tell you what, you draw Tenzin riding on a unicorn, and I’ll consider it ;)

          • Hipopótamo

Don’t tempt me, I might just do it!

          • I dare you! :D

  • Hipopótamo

This is very kinematic, I can see this moving in my mind’s eye. The art is certainly improving every day.

  • That guy getting hit from up on top, falling to the ground in a big wet splathump… that is awesome. Artistically awesome, I should clarify. It really sucks for the poor bloke getting aerated.

    • Also maybe not 100% accurate to the laws of physics, but I believe the Rule of Cool applies here ;)

  • Excellent work… Carry on :)

  • Penpencilandbrush

I thought monasteries were nonviolent places.

    • Maybe BEFORE the world ended. A healthy dose of realism and the requirements of survival changed that :)

Thanks for your comments! I hope to see more in the future :D

  • Otterkit

Reading your guys’ posting schedule is enough to make me feel tired…

    • It made me tired too, so I don’t follow it as closely anymore ;)
